Opinion Dear Luke - Regarding Tom Boyd

Hi Luke

Wanted to drop you a quick note regarding Tom.

No doubt by now you’ve realised that Trengove and English are our 2 best rucks, leaving Tom 3rd in line there.

No doubt you’ve also realised that Schache is a lead up CHF, leaving us in dire need of a marking, Full-forward.

May I suggest a couple of things in relation to Tom this off-season.

1. Get him to drop 5-8kg.
2. Get him to focus on speed and agility.
3. Employ a dedicated key forward coach to assist him with leading patterns and techniques to gain separation from his opponent.
4. For the love of God teach him the right overhead marking technique.
5. For the love of God teach him some basics around his set shot routine.

1 mobile key forward, 1 mobile key defender, 1 Ruckman

15 athletic, strong, gut runners who work hard all day and apply manic pressure. Cause the turnover spot up lose men up forward.

We pioneered it in 2016, manic pressure, Richmond has taken it a step further.

You do not need big men taking big marks to win the premiership anymore. Really puts Boyd at pressure to keep a spot in the team. Your 5 points would help at least.

Richmond play with a list imbalance that other teams cannot match. Richmond players take unders and are under no
illusion as to who the real stars are. The four pillars of defence are Rance, Astbury, Grimes and Vlastuin their running
defenders are Houli, Short, Ellis, McIntosh, and Broad that is a lot of defenders is it not. Man on Man or even numbers
is the obvious counter, but only if you have a similar list imbalance. Thus a lot of teams getting over run late in their
games.

We wouldn’t have won a flag without Tom Boyd. I believe he should play permanent forward all next year. If it doesn’t work, then think about other options for him elsewhere, but only after giving him enough of a chance as permanent forward.

If you do, come to any of the locked gates push aside the hessian, say the secret password (I'll pm it to you. Lest these other peanuts think its a free for all of coaching tips) and I'll let you in personally.

Boydy has all the tools to be at least a best 22 player for us and I just feel like he hasnt had a good run at it... the most games he has played in a year was 15 and that was in the blessed year where he put it together somewhat towards the end .

We love to shit on his marking ability but he does at least bring the ball to ground in most situations unlike roughy at the moment who is getting outmarked like theres no tomorrow on his contract...

We still havent seen our true key position potential in one team going forward which I believe will be English ruck/forward (85%+), Schache half forward and Boyd Full forward and switching to ruck when English gets tired. This combination will be probably the most skilled 3 big guys outside of GWS' lobb, patton, cameron.

But then again we could just ruin them as per usual...

Would love him to just be given the chance to work deep and high in the forward line for a prolonged period of time without being thrown into the ruck
