Okay Windyhill, you talk about 'tree huggers', (a title which I have been accused of before), forget about events in the USA. Do you think capital punishment should be introduced in Australia?

Yes I agree! The Anita Cobby killers, the Janine Balding killers and any others that commit horrific murders.
As long as it can be proved beyond all doubt in court that those on trial are guilty. Yes! Bring back the death penalty.

And you thought I was a 'tree hugger', right? :D

i still do... i'd like to see how far you'd be willing to push "beyond all doubt" my guess is we'd never get a conviction.

'beyond all doubt' means there is absolute proof that the person or persons on trial are guilty. The Anita Cobby killers were guilty beyond all doubt, one of them even confessed to being involved.
Martin Bryant was guilty too. Amateur (tourist) video evidence confirms it.

ahh good, glad to hear you will take video evidence, not the usual "it could have been someone who looked like me" tripe

and about the anita cobby killers... would they have confessed if capital punishment was on the cards??

If you kill somene for something they did that doesn't punish them. It punishes family and friends. They escape.

I reckon lock em up for years, make em feel like the lowest form of life. That really punishes them, unlike killing them.

And what if a jury gets it wrong? Then it's a bit late!

Okay for a start. The Port Arthur Massacre ( Martin Bryant) occupies my mind because I was down in Hobart when it happened. The memories of helicopters flying overhead and news bulletins are still vivid.

Not sure. Maybe he would have, maybe not. He was certainly scared enough to do it. The others who did not plead guilty were sentenced to 'never to be released'.

Gotta be on for this sniper in the U.S. Step forward all tree huggers who think he shouldn`t be zapped.
1/. Why do you care?
2/. Why 'tree huggers', has he been cutting down trees?

I can answer #2 for you, Jim.

The term "tree huggers" is a euphemism for those who lie quite a bit far to the left on the socio-political spectrum, as it exists and originates in the USA.

My mother has been accused of being one, and branded as "guilty as charged" as well, she says. I've even told her that she is such a bleeding-heart liberal, she has to "get an IV and a catheter in order to vote". And she does not deny that, either. :D

As for the original question, as it pertains to the Beltway sniper, yes, the guy should fry like a chicken when he's caught. At least in theory...

Cheers,
William

I dont want him to get the death penalty if he ever gets caught. Im no tree hugger tho, and im not a person who thinks its wrong either.

But seriously.....why give him the death penalty? Its getting him off to easy.

If you want a real punishment. Stick the guy in jail for the rest of his life, in solitary confinement, with no possible way for him to hang himself or kill himself. Get three big guys to beat the crap out of him three times a week. Feed him nothing but bread and water for the rest of his life.

THAT is a punishment. Not this pussy death penalty crap where he gest off scot free. Make him suffer for years.

If i was to go on a mad shooting spree i know what id be fearing more - id rather get the death penalty than be put in jail for 60 years.

I'm a million miles away from being a tree hugger (I don't often have sympathy for anyone), but I don't believe in capital punishment for 3 reasons:

1) People do get wrongly convicted,
2) No one should be officially 'allowed' to kill another human,
3) Two wrongs don't make a right.

Besides, like Macca said, I would rather these people spend the rest of their lives being punished in jail - prolong the punishment. Particulalry if they are sex offenders like the Cobby murderers.

Couldn't agree more, I'd be choosing death over that. Especially since his jail mates could probably do worse things than beat the crap out of him.

But thats the beauty of the death penalty in the USA, you usually sit a good 15-20yrs in jail before you get fried. Can you imagine sitting in jail for 20yrs counting down to your final day inbetween beatings and "pleasure" showers?

It's got nothing to do with being a "tree-hugger".
It is an unworkable form of punishment - unless you are willing to sacrifice innocent lives (however few).

Lindy Chamberlain would be dead now if we had capital punishment.

Seeing as it was mainly public opinion that got her sent to jail, should those members of the public whose opinions got her there be tried as murderers IF she had been "zapped"???
