Does anybody think he is any good??
Forget about who is better for a minute, I recon that he could be successfully replaced by Stiffy_18 or virtually anyone and the team would be better for it.

Eh, why no get rid of him immediately? Throw the club into some turmoil, get rid of his grumpy mug from around the place, bring in someone smiley like Darren Jar-jar

He should he not have his contract renewed, he isnt taking the club anywhere and listened to what he had to say to MMM in Melbourne on the way home from the game, and to me doesnt seem to give a **** either he said ' ohh I just said to the boys, you know you made a few skille rrors out there but you know they are fixable, so yeah we will work on that during the week, ohh yeah we should be right' to me that anit worth ****, and shows no passion or desire to take this club anywhere:rolleyes:

Come on, we say play the kids, give them gametime. We know they are going to be up and down, or plain just not be up to this level.
But when it happens, we say no no , this is not acceptable, must be the coaches fault.

You can't have it both ways.

Decide if you want to play the kids, and rebuild the side.

or

Get Smart and Burns back in, and forget about blooding youngsters.

But blaming the coach is too easy.

No but perhaps its a sign of a coach and club, that has embarked on a rebuilding process, and has a reality check on where they are and where they are going.

I personally have no problems on their current direction.
The only players they haven't played, they can't yet because of injury or bad form, but everone else they are looking at, and giving them an opportunity.

There aren’t that many youngsters; most of the team has been around long enough to be better than they are.
And that level of mismanagement rest with the coach.
My complaints with him has always been his inflexible attitudes, wether in selections or tactical moves or just not doing anything at all when nothing is working (in 1 game or a month of games).

And I would support that view.
But we had 4 first year players in last night (if you count Hentschell), and probably 4 very fringe players in as well, with no KPP strenghth, and injuries through the game to Begley, I think the performance was probably as expected when the team was announced on Thursday.

Add 4 quality players to that side (Biglands, Goodwin, Smart, M.Stevens) plus Reilly, and the whole team dimension changes, and all of a sudden as in the Port game, we're back and travelling.

Its a fine line the club, and coach walks.

would accept that IF the same cr@p hadn’t been happening for so long. But now it is just an ongoing excuse.

I'd stick with Ayres for the time being. Maybe retrenching him during July or August.

He should definitely go at seasons end at the latest.

It's time for a new direction.

Ayres deserves better than to get the flick mid-season.

He has a contract until the end of the season, and that should be honoured.

Having said that, I would be upfront with him and tell him that he won't be re-appointed, so that we can openly canvas other options. He can too.

If he doesn't want to stay until the end of the season on that basis, Craig would make a good caretaker coach.

But it's time for a change in 2005.

Some people are just THICK

This 'sack the coach' garbage is just getting old and boring. Absolutely don't sack him now, that'll do more harm than good. If we don't make the finals, give him a 1 year deal with a 'finals-or-bust' ultimanium. I think Ayres is a very good coach who has done a fantastic job at the Crows in his time at the club. It only took him 2 seasons to build a team destroyed by Malcolm Blight into a finals side.

What I DON'T want to see is a coach picked based on what the fans want, or Ayres to be sacked if we make the finals. We only have to look at clubs who have done this to see what happens. Just look at Norwood, who sacked their coach in 2001 despite making the finals (and then picked an incompetent coach based on the opinions of supporters), and they're now bottom of the ladder and going no-where. St. Kilda did a similar thing with Alves in 1998 and the club crashed, taking them 5 YEARS and 3 coaches to recover from their stupidity.

Contrary to popular belief, sacking the coach is not the answer to all the clubs problems. If anything, it'll make the situation WORSE. Just look at what happened when we sacked Cornes, we ended up with Robert Shaw, and we all know what happened then!

Yeah we recruited/drafted loads of talent that won us Premierships in 1997/8.

If we don't make the finals this year, how could we make the finals in 2005 without Carey, Clarke, Smart, Burns and possibly M.Stevens?

Can you not see that we need to rebuild?

I'm quite prepared to miss the finals for one or two years in order to nurture our younger players. Obviously you aren't.

I am, but whoever's our coach will make ZERO difference to this. I'm sick and tired of hearing how Ayres is to blame for everything!

The correct thing in this case
Load of crap. Ayres can't make Scott Welsh hold his marks, he can't kick the ball for his players, he can't tackle for them and he can't chase for them.

Sure the buck stops with the coach BUT what does all this achieve. Sweet **** all!!!!!!. Us, armchair experts can all do better, we would all do a better job. What a load of crap, there is a reason why we sut in the stands and not in the coaches box.

Blaming Ayres is a cheap way out and the amount of crap that has been posted in regards to this topic in the last 48 hours has been a disgrace.

perfect response. Allows both parties to maintain their dignity. Best way of handling it.

Time to go Gary

The man has had 5 years at the helm, and like all things left in the one place to long they get stale.

Gary is no leigh mathews, or sheedy, so its time for some new blood good or bad. The players seem disinterested, and this is the coaches fault. After all that is what he is payed for, to motivate and train them, if he cant achieve that then the battle is lost.

He has had some good years, and this is a bad one, but at the end of it all if the players are not playing with passion for him, then something has to change and you are not going to get rid of the whole team.

I would not sack him, but as others have said, tell him he will not be there next year, and if he wishes to leave early thats his call.

Coaches are like pollies, if they dont have the confidence of the those under them they get voted out of office

Agrree with everything you have said Macca.

It is bad reflection on the club if Ayres were to be sacked mid-season & I can't see it happening.
