Alright guys. Would appreciate everyones opinions here. Need to made a decision by tomorrow and not quite sure which way I am going to go yet.

Basically my boss wants me to go to Brisbane and Sydney to work for 2 months. Our usuall two reps in those states have left the business so the company needs somone to fill in for them for the next two months.

I am in a administration/customer service/ support type office role at the moment and am trying to angle towards a rep role in Victoria. There are only 2 positions in Victoria though.

I will get flown home to play footy on the weekends then fly back out again. Obviously I will be by myself when I am away so will have not to much to do when I knock off work for the day. I will miss all my external comittments like footy training, Army Reserves, spending time with friends and the girlfriend etc. Keep in mind I am a very lifestyle first person, and really enjoy my time at the footy club, with mates and doing Army.

I will be getting an extra $1500 a month, part of that incentive based. (plus all expenses paid whilst I am away obviously).

Boss has pretty much said if I do it, then I guarentee myself a rep spot when one opens up after I get back. But who knows when that will be. The two guys working now have been with the company years, and are comfortable and I dont see them leaving any time soon.

He infered if I don't do it then I will be shooting myself in the footy and ruling my self in the future.

So basically if I go I will probably make an extra $2500 before tax. So less than $2000 after tax for 2 months work.

I will be losing roughly $100 a week from not going to Army reserves though, so lets say roughtly $1000 over 2 months.

Is it worth giving up all my free time for 2 months for $1500? The money is only a small part though to be honest, it is more the brownie points it will get me, but even if I do get the brownie points there is no guarantees any opportunities will open up when I get back.

Oh and he wants a decsions by tomorrow if I can leave this week.

Thoughts?

TL/DR- To go interstate to work for 2 months or not?

Do it. It's only a few weeks.

If you don't I'll promise you that the next opportunity will be offered to someone else.

yeah i'd do it.

Take the missus with you. not necessarily for the whole time, because being able to get home and then plod around in your underwear all night is awesome. But get her to come up for a couple of weeks. Treat it like a mini holiday

Don't go man.

If you do your form out on the footy field will surely suffer (you've been going great this season bro we need u out there!!)
2 whole months away from the missus???? who knows if she will even remember u by the time u come back, she might have moved on with another bloke who wants 2 b with her!!

And army reserves???/ what if they need u, war in iraq etc..

2 months ain't a thang, man. Do it.

Yeh if it's something you really want to do then 2 months will be worth it. If you're looking for something to do after work then train hard in lieu of footy training or fly your GF up and do her

No one should live in fear of "what ifs"

Cheers for the imput so far.

Swaying towards doing it. Missing 2 months of training will suck. Finals in about two months and we have heaps of guys missing out on a game each week.

There was a bit more involved in thw conversation with the boss, Friday he wanted me to go for 3 weeks andhe totally moved the goal posts today.

The way he prettu much said I was black booked if I didn't go put a sour taste in my mouth aswell.

Well, that new bit of info...."black booked if you said no"....i totally change my mind. Screw him. Don't go.

1. To say that means he is more guilt-tripping and threatening you than he is impressed with you and dusting off a future promotion for you. If a position above does open, ie, he wont be looking at you, the way he 'evaluates' you (based on having to threaten to you)

2. Shit boss to work for, to engage in that sort of attitude.

3. Shouldn't bow to that, show him you the man, and march to the beat of your own drum.

What to say, imo...when you say "no".

"I would normally eagerly say yes, take on more responsibility, help out, but unfortunately, at this time, there are too many family issues that I have to be here for. Work/career is very important, but family comes first at certain times."

I wish you the best and would trust my instinct if I was you.

This won't be the first time you'll make sacrifices for employment.

You are on the cusp of making a decision for all of the wrong reasons - financial. Show yourself some respect.

It's kind of a shit position he's put you in. He's blackmailing you to say yes, that he even has to say "black book" shows he isn't very high on you per se, so doubtful, as I said before, he thinks of you in terms of promotion anyway. The rock/hard-place, the shit of it, is that if you say 'no' he is black-booking you, and that could mean future work reference too, and, day-to-day giving you a harder time. So you're being dictated to say 'yes' to avoid the shit, but even if you did go, he still doesn't think highly of you, and if you didn't go, he sounds like one who holds grudges and will give you shit day-in day-out. Lose-lose situation for you whichever way you decide.

Again, imo, **** that shit, and say no. He can't fire you for it anyway.

Sound dumb him saying "when one opens up" he's not really committing to anything at all. Do what you want to do, a touch of sacrifice every now and then will make the good times seem even better though, so if you believe your boss' honesty and integrity and want to advance your career it's probably the smart choice, agreed with taking your girlfriend, or getting her to come up on weekends?

On third thoughts....

Ignore the boss's attitude and blackmailing. Don't hold your breath for the promotion (vic rep job), don't bank on it (in the back of your mind), if it happens it happens, just don't build it up only to be letdown (which is possible given the black book comment).

However, just weighing everything up....there's that chance still (vic rep job), all expenses paid, you're being flown back and forth from football, you're getting an extra $2,500.

Do it. Sorry for the flip-flop-flip...but that's probably the best decision to make weighing everything up, the consequences, the possible opportunities, the financials, the football/flying paid for, etc.

Do you see yourself in the job long term? He has pretty much emotionally blackmailed you into going. If you think you can do without the promotion later on down the track, stay here. And it depends how important work/the job is to you.

On the other hand, two months isn't long.

you could really **** with him and just quit altogether?

then you get the bonus of being able to watch the entire ashes series.
