What has been overlooked in the raptorous scenes after today's victory is the vast improvement in EFC's DEFENCE.

EFC have conceded

1 x 15 goals
1 x 16 goals
1 x 12 goals
2 x 10 goals.

EFC may have more than 8 to 10 wins, if they continue this defence for most of the season.

And this has been achieved with a patchwork quilt of defenders with Ryder out of defence, Hurley and Daniher missing games.

Slowly the players are learning and implementing Knight's methodology.

I liked the look of our midfield with Watson, Lonergan and Hocking in close at the contest. Hard bodies who usually make a contest. They are nicely complemented by Lovett and Winderlich, who have consistently been dangerous outlets this year.

Forward line pressure was superb yesterday too, and caused plenty of nervous moments for their backline.

Our defence failed quite a bit in the last quarter i have to say.
I mean how do you think Collingwood got 14 points up in the first place.

but oh well, problem solved :thumbsu:

If you look at it more closely you will realise it is innacuaraccy not opportunity that has allowed us to keep defences to such low goal margins. Much like our own innacuracy has kept our own scores modest. In the Carlton and Port games we could have easily had 20+ goals kicked on us and Collingwood should of had atleast another 4 yesterday.

And we should have had another 8 and had the game finished at 3/4 time.

Our defensive pressure and accountability yesterday was excellent for the most parts. The last quarter wasn't that great but by that stage a lot of the players were well and truly out on their legs from the efforts they'd put in before.

Whether teams kick more behinds is irrelevant - Has it occurred to you that part of the reason for the number of behinds could be defensive pressure.

After all you win on most goals kicked not the most behinds.

What kind of a comment is that? Our defense didn't fail - maybe you didn't notice that our players were absolutely spent in the last quarter due to Hille being off along with Lloyd and Lonergan's corkie's.

Bingo.

We kick straight and the game would've been over at 3/4 time. I would've been absolutely gutted had we lost, we had the better of Collingwood throughout most of the day.

I agree, we clearly dominated most of the match. If lloyd, Lucas, myers and gus kicked straight, we would have thrashed the pies. oh well, we still won:)

Me too. Watson and Hocking especially give me great confidence - it feels like the opposition really have to earn every clearance when they are both in there.

I was super impressed with the defensive side of Dempsey's game too. Thought he might be exposed sooner or later but he has more courage and smarts than I gave him credit for.

During the 2nd and 3rd quarters we had a great defence during their kickouts. If we can turn those behinds into goals and improve on that defence we should be a good team. I think there was a lot of good pressure throughout the game too. The we let ourselves down for most of the 4th quarter sadly but the last few minutes showed exactly how we need to play our attacking game.

Yes it occured then I realised holy shit i watched the last half of the game on the weekend and saw Brown miss 2 set shots along with plenty of other set shots from getable positions. I also watched the Carlton game in it's entirety and saw Fev kick atleast 4 behinds he would normally eat up.

It's about the combined score of the goals and behinds if we kick 1 more goal and 10 less behinds we lose the ****ing game.

As for behinds being irrelevant look at the North game see how many behinds we kicked and then stop and think why we may have lost apart from a shithouse performance all over the field from most reports (didn't see the game so can't say for certain).

As I said our innacuracy is hurting us as well we have been just as woeful offensively as our opponents that is not in dispute. What is in dispute is the effectiveness of our defense to date which isn't as flattering as first posted, aside from the last 2 games we have allowed an average of 30 scoring shots against us a game.
