Deledio also said he would put his hand up to become Richmond captain when current skipper Chris Newman eventually steps down from the role.

He admitted he had previously not coveted the role, wary of taking on the added responsibility and pressure that comes with it. But the 2004 No.1 draft pick said he had learnt to cope better with football pressures as he had matured.

"I certainly won't shy away from putting my hand up for it once Chris (Newman) gives it up," Deledio said.

Would he be a consideration or have we already locked Cotch in.

Will probably be Newmans last year this year and i would say Cotchin is miles ahead of anybody els ATM.

But the VC would have to be a 3 person job and Jack,Lids, and a defender possibly Batchelor would be my prefference.

mmm tough one i reckon

there would have to be a vote from players and staff all equalling the same as the other

Lids has had more years with the club and has done the hard yards :thumbsu:

were cotch is already taking interviews of chris and is just pure class :D

if i was to vote i would see how this year turns out and see who can lift us in the next five rounds ;)

Deledio is our Goddard. He's just spent a few less years in the oven. Make him vice captain when Newman steps down but in the meantime let home focus on becoming an absolute gun.

I wonder what we do when Goddard comes to the Tigers through free agency at the end of the year? I guess then Goddard is our Goddard and Deledio can be whatever he wants....

Sending the guy into an early retirement?

The guy turns 30 this year, besides a horrible break in his leg and the knee injury last year the guy barely has a background of bad soft tissue injuries.

Can play for another 2-3 years. :thumbsu:

Isn't it great that we can actually debate more than one player in contention for the captaincy...that hasn't happened for a looooooong time

Reckon Cotchin's name is already engraved on the honour board for 2013.

He admitted he had previously not coveted the role

Telling. You can learn to lead, but you'll never be as good as someone who does it instinctively. Good to see him putting his hand up though.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Newman go around again with the C next to his name in 2013.

Should he have a quality season this year and the Tigers make finals... I would have no problems seeing Newman stay Captain. He is still only 29.

Assuming the Tigers don't make finals (we will), Trent seem the obvious choice to take over the mantle.

^ I think he means last year as captain.

Newman isn't a Brad Green type of player, Newman actually has leadership qualities and he has the respect of his team mates.

I see no need for him to give up the Captaincy before he retires, Cotchin is the newly appointed VC, let him grow as a person and as a leader, no need to rush Cotchin or anybody into these sorts of situations.

Make them co -captains...happy with that.

I agree with this. Lids has stood up on the field plenty of times when we needed it. Some of his games in the middle in 2009 it looked like one bloke trying to pull the whole team over the line - but he never had sufficient support.

Now that we've got a few more exciting youngsters folks are ignoring how good a servant Lids has been for the club - and he's only 24! I love the leadership Cotch is showing as much as the next bloke and he is setting himself up as the natural successor, but I think Lids has earnt the right throw his name into contention as well. I would be very happy to see Lids/Cotch as co-captains in the future.

It won't e unless they take it off him, he made it pretty clear last week when he was on AFL 360 he wants to remain captain for a bit longer still.

I hate co captains. Makes no sense. You have one captain and then a leadership team.

Deledio is a great leader, but I say this with all respect, he is second to Cotchin. For that we are lucky to have a few leaders in our young brigade, but even more fortunately we have one of the best leaders in Cotchin to have graced our club.

Chris Newman was vital and his leadership is unheralded, but the next captain is Trent Cotchin. Without a doubt.

My thoughts exactly, if we didn't have Cotchin then Deledio would be in the box seat

No way will Batchelor be Vice captain. I'd rather put Foley or Martin.

I was a bit surprised that Foley got left out of the leadership group this year, he's a good role model of a professional footballer.

Martin I don't see as a leader type in the classic sense, he seems to prefer to follow the lead of others and let his playing do the talking. He is a bit more reserved than a Cotchin or Deledio type.

If you look through our list there is a lot of leadership talent to choose from. Youngsters like Conca, Batchelor and Ellis all supposedly have great leadership qualities. There's guys like Jackson, Foley, Rance (especially in defence) and even Houli who speak well and are strong characters.

Then you have older guys like Miller, King and Tuck that lead by example and show the younger guys a thing or too about what is expected and required at this level. Probably a large factor in the cultural change down at Punt road and why the playing group seems to have strong unity and belief as a collective unit :thumbsu:
