Since BF is full of intelligent people  I have a query.

If someone thinks that they are depressed (i cut the bush in half and say me) yet doesnt want to see anyone to confirm it because of a lack of money and a lack of wanting to know the truth, what should this person (me) do?

Seriously, sort it out as soon as you can.
I have it and I almost waited to long and almost did something stupid.
Go to the doctors and they will usually help you out.

See your GP who will relay you onto a specialist.

Money doenst come into this, we are talking about your well being and happiness. It will be the best money you ever spent.

If money is a real issue then
See a GP that bulk bills, they can do a number of things, including putting you on SSRI type mediciation (this stuff is very modern and works wonders), and organising free cognative based treatment (you will need this so that the underlying issue causing the depression can be treated).

Just so that you know, depression is an illness just as 'physical' illnesses are.
20% of the population will suffer some form of depression during their lifetime

IT IS TOTALLY FIXABLE.

Supporting South Africa, I know how you feel :(

Just do what local said and stay tough.

Sort it out as quickly as possible. Don't worry about the money side of it. As someone else said, in 20 years time, you'll realise it's the best money you have spent.

First work out why you think you have depression. As noted ring BeyondBlue or Lifeline and talk to someone about your issues and hopefully they can point you in the right direction.

Or are you just unhappy with the direction your life has taken?

Brittany at 17 if you have depression I will go he for chasy.

Be very careful that the doctor isnt giving you Zolofts just to get the next patient into his room

If you believe people in their late teens can't have depression, you are quite wrong...

If money is an issue there are free alternatives other than paying for a psychologist. Go to the websites that have been suggested in the above posts.

Taking positive steps in the right direction will be a comfort to you.

ps. as perthcrow said, try and avoid antidepressents. Doctors love putting you on those things, i think they get a kickback. They've tried to put me on them before and i've never been depressed .

I would ask is it clinical depression or doctor assisted depression?

Dont get me wrong I do believe depression as an illness is all to real. But I question some of the GP prognosis'

this gives a further pointer to my feelings on doctors

No doubt that is the case sometimes, but I have seen what is depression, especially with my friend who I mentioned in an above post, before doctors got involved.
I have actually wondered, with the poor standards of some GPs, how doctors correctly diagnose something like depression or other mental illness.

I hope your friend is ok now.

I just feel that if Brittany had what I call True Depression she wouldnt be posting on the net as I believe depression to be a withdrawal from the world. Then again pretending nothing is wrong is one of the hardest reasons TD is hard to define

i strongly agree

I don't agree because I believe depression affects people in an individual way. So while some people may choose to withdraw from the world, other's depression shows in another way.

No its not, that is agrophobia, which sometimes goes along with depression, but not always

Exactly, it affects different people in different ways

nicky - what is wrong with taking medically prescribed drugs?

There is ALOT wrong with them. Most depression problems stem from oppressing some sort of issue, there are 1 million different options to try before taking prescription drugs; one of my best friends was prescribed zoloft in school, this was great for her because she felt great. However by the time she was 23 she knew that drugs were a lazy option and she made it her life mission to feel good on her own; She is the happiest and most fulfilled person i know. I think it's obvious why;

1. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT! She has acknowledged and worked through her pain instead of masking it with bullshyt drugs.

2. With her quest to help herself without drugs she has naturally been drawn to people with a positive outlook on life; self healing, yoga, meditation, chinese medicine. I believe you are who you surround yourself with to a certain extent.

If you feel that bad that you need antidepressants then try changing your life first; take some time to listen to yourself.

I know someone who has been adicted to those things her whole life and she believes her 'mental' issues are that complex that nothing can help - what a copout!!! this is such a dangerous way to look at mental illness.

I've seen first hand what depression can do to someone and i know that antidepressants merely mask a sympton without fixing anything.

and Murray how often do you think people take nurofen for a headache because their brain is dehydrated when all they need is a glass of water.

interesting.. i've been thinking about posting about this for the past few months...

have a friend, who's wife has been diagnosed with bi-polar... she did start some medication and now has given up on it... will no longer see doctor... problem is, she wont acknowledge she has a problem and refuses to see medical practioner anymore....

his life is a living hell at the moment, trying to cope with her dramatic mood swings (which are getting worse and worse, even turning physical in some instances)... i had a meeting with two of her close friends today, to try to work out a way to help her.. she's alienated most of her family and parents, as well as other friends...

how to you help someone who wont acknowlege that they have a problem? .... have taken a look at the beyondblue site.. and will take some details/notes down...

Depression is not about worrying over a losing team, nor losing a job. It's about feeling down and you don't know why you are that way for a fair amount of time. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain, and both anti-depressants and therapy will help this.

Yep, serotonin.
Anti depressants replace the chemical, thus putting it back in balance
