I made a similar thread last year but everyone says how good our depth is and how far ahead it is of any other club...Im not so sure.

If we look each area we have..

Small Back - Dave Johnson and Kane Tenace to an extent

Tall Back - Tom Lonergan, Tom Gillies (seems ready made)

Mids - Simon Hogan, Nathan Djerkurra

Small Forwards - Dont really have any, Gamble could be classed as one and Djerkurra could come under consideration in this position.

Tall Forwards - Tom Lonergan

Rucks - Trent West

We only have a few injuries at the moment in Josh Hunt, Gary Ablett, Brad Ottens are the ones that come to mind but if we got a few injuries like essendon i think we would be in a bit of trouble.

Midfield would be right because we have plenty of them playing in all areas but down back we have no one except dave johnson, i wouldnt be confident with Tenace, and if we did get a couple of midfield injuries it would force Chappy and rooke and byrnes to go into the middle and then we wouldnt have any forward players.

what do you guys think? have i missed anyone??

Maybe down back you could also add Jeremy Laidler? I admit i don't watch alot of geelong VFL games, but from what i saw at Coburg i was really impressed with him. Reads the play very well and is a good strong mark.

If you look at every list, how many teams are going to have such a vast amount of depth though? I think its handy we have a few players who have played 2's, that have had a taste of Senior footy as well.

I think that one of the beauties of our team is it's versatility. We have quite a few players that can now play a number of roles. With Hunt out we now have had Corey, Bartel and Kelly play that small defender type role pretty well. Ablett, Bartel, and Ling are all able to play forward as well. Chappy has now added another dimension to his game by playing more game time in the middle.

To have players of the quality of Gamble, Lonergan, Byrnes, West, Mumford and DJ not in our "best 22" demonstrates how good our depth actually is. Having said that if we lost another tall backman we could be in trouble.

Injuries will always have an impact. We are better placed than most to cope with a few.

Compared to most teams, our depth is awesome. We can cover almost everyone well except for Scarlett and Mooney. We didnt play with three defenders in our side for the first six or so weeks (Harley, Hunt and Egan.) Milburn even missed a game there. Hawthorn had the same problem and they are clearly struggling defense wise, while we acted as if we didnt give a damn.

I suppose versatility could be a better word to use. Kelly for instance is playing more of a defensive semi-half back role and doing well. Corey was doing the same until recently. Chapman spent alot of time in the midfield to compensate for Ling and then Ablett not being there, etc etc.

I didn't add Laidler because he is currently a rookie but he is flying

You're taking the piss out of us,aren't you s_a_b ?

haha no mate i agree with you 100% but its been stated by the coach that they will try as hard as possible to get him some games in this year and he is a top draft pick who has the potential to be a good enough player at afl level, just never produces

Tenace will go down in history as an over-valued draft pick. Will probably be delisted or traded this year so I think at another club he might get more of a go. I wonder if he would be interested in going to the Gold Coast for say a top 20 or 30 pick in the draft?

highly doubt we would get a pick that high for him he is a hack

There is not enough space on the list to have depth players and when you do get good ones they are unsatisfied sitting in the VFL. See Prismall, Callan, King.

I think this a ridiculous thread.

No team has complete depth all over their list. We are already playing without our best side and winning.

Exactly. If Hunt, Egan, Ablett, Brown, Ranga, Ottens, Motlop, Simpson were all fit. How bad would the depth look?

I only made it because our afl side cant be beaten at this stage and vfl side can barely win, they played a team on the w.e that had 6 listed players and only won by a goal

They are also not getting afl game time so when we do get injuries which is bound to happen, we need to have these players under some sort of afl match condition, it showed in the finals last year against the dogs and even in the granny im sure if we had vfl in the finals they probably would of played wojcinski and maybe even gamble and re thought about playing kelly, stokes and to a certain extent chapman

Our VFL side is pretty young though, and young sides tend to take a while to gel. The losses of Mitch, Hogan and S.Simpson to injury wouldn't be helping either, and we have the likes of Ranga to come back and Motlop hasn't played yet. Get Ablett and Ottens back into the seniors, Mumford and most likely Byrnes will go back to the VFL, and the team instantly looks a bit better.

A spine of Gillies, Lonergan, Hogan, S.Simpson and Mitch Brown looks promising. Add the likes of Djerrkura, Ranga, A.Varcoe, Motlop, Mumford, Byrnes, West and Gamble to that spine, and the side looks pretty good.

How many top-up players have we had play in the VFL so far this season? I'd say there'd be a fair percentage every week....about 40%.

Good point. well we have had Pods, Firman, Hollmer, Simpkin, Ben Johnson, Sheringham, Tutungi, Beatie, Carson, Hughes, Raidme, Smith, Westwood....So we have had 13 vfl players but it doesnt help that our vfl list is probably one of the worst
