Just had a look at current listed players that are not playing tonight for various reasons and its a testiment to our very good depth.
In fact, I think this team would be pretty competitive with sides like gold coast/ port;-

Ross Hooker Long
Hibberd Myers Browne
Dempsey Hocking NLM
Welsh Gumby Daniher
Williams Steinberg Winderlich

T.Bell Watson Lonergan

I think we will have a fair bit of ammo come trade time and have a really good mix of youth and experience now at Essendon

TBH i disagree. I think that in a couple of years time we will have very good depth however we have seen this year that if we have a couple of injuries in the same area we struggle to cover it.

With gumby, carlisle, daniher out all year we have struggled to have a consistent KP forward all year (and im not counting crameri as a KPF). We have been forced to play ruckmen in KP posts and that has really affected our structure at times.

Our midfield- this weekend will be a true test but we have seen that when we are short on runners we can be easily exposed, and this week we will be very short for inside ball winners and IMO will struggle to match Carlton in that area

Even in defence we have looked a bit light on at times and this is the area with most depth, having to play hurley forward hasnt helped but with hooker and pears never playing in the same team we have had to play fletcher, myers, hardingham on KP forwards which hasnt been ideal at all.

Teams like hawthorn, geelong and collingwood have great depth, we are building towards it but are not there yet. Once players like Carlisle, Gumbelton, Daniher (x2) start playing consistently that will be when our depth really stands out

Long and Daniher are actual myths and do not really exist.

Blue: Best 22
Black: Boarder line/future
Green: Unknowns
Red: Finished

Doesn't exactly spell great depth worthy of a toast thread.

Ha yeah I was also wondering what was happening with both of these guys.
IIRC Daniher was pretty good when he played for us, especially a few years back when he played on Fev. He shut him down & constantly ran off of him. I think that he has a lot of talent, shame injury (or what ever ) has kept him out.

As for Long, I am not sure. Does he even play for Bendigo. I have heard rumours some one some where saw him kick a footy some time. But thats about it. To me he is nothing.

Delist Long by the years end. Keep Daniher & get him playing with his bro. Could help his brothers development when he finally touches down.

Dons by 11pts tonight.

Yeah poor Longy looks like he'll be rookied at the end of the year imo.

I think our young kids have made brilliant progress this season but our midfield will be just a bit underdone tonight missing Heath. Sad to say but Calton by 30. Would love to be proven wrong

Yeah we could use NLM through the midfield as Watson, Hocking, Lonergan and Myers are all out. We should hold onto him just in case we lose 4 grunt mids again rather than trying to develop our list further.

NFI.

Apparently you have NFI what 'depth" means then.

The only reason NLM hasn't come into the side earlier is because he's been injured the whole time.

Other players like Howlett, Melksham, Zaharakis, Monfries and even Prismall have stood up to fill in through the middle and have a much better future with the club. While NLM might be handy at this very moment in time, but so would Watson, Hocking, etc... He's also on the quick decline and to keep him on next year would hold our future development back.

You obviously have NFI what depth means considering you are fighting that one individual equates to it.

I think your colour-coded assesment is a fair one Donakebab, but think you'd find the guys you have in Blue AND Black would be pretty much walk up starts at most teams, with the exception of maybe Collingwood and Geelong.
So if having 10 players on our list that arent currently in our 22 that are walk up starts at 15 of 17 other clubs isn't depth then I dont know what is......

Hard to feel good tonight but come round 1 2012, we're going to be a very competitive unit. We're building up the base of midfielders and I have faith that one or more of Heppell, Zaharakis, Melksham and Hocking will join the ranks of Watson as a very very good midfielder.

From what ive seen of Long its not a question of ability, looks a very good and composed player, its just getting on the park to show it.

When you look at the depth there is a lot of youth and inexperience in there right now and are being exposed in the seniors when the more experienced players are out ie Watson, Hocking, Fletch etc...
Unlike the geelongs and collingwoods who can rest the fringe players and get that experience into the kids and build the depth thats needed throughout a season.

Agree. I'm very comfortable with our best 25 or so.

The bolded being the most accurate statement here...

All bar 1 of the 10 players you mention that are not currently in our 22, were not in due to injury, not because they are not best 22. So talking about them as evidence to depth is just plain wrong.
If the players that replaced them in the side (i.e the players not in our best 22) were also walk-up starts in most other clubs 22, then we would be talking about depth, but I think you'll find they wouldn't be.

... And just for the record, that team would get smashed by GC.
