Autopsy Depth

Small forward is a unnecessary commidity , which rarely perform when wanted/needed, big games , and which solely take the place of a midfielder. The least amount of small midfielders we have upon our list the better .
Disagree. A Betts, Garlett, Milne, Rioli type player would add another dimension to our forward line. Not saying we need to load up, but if there's a decent one I'd have a look.

IMO, Milne's inability to midfield cost them a rotation and the drawn GF , whilst during Carlton's lesser period this year the common theme was the poor performance of Betts and Garlett . Having players within a side rely so heavily on others winning the footy isn't great .
Rioli is a different creature as he can go into the midfield and have some effect .

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was "Ben Nason" but I do see where you are coming from. Target the elite state sides (multiple premiers like Centrals, Port Melbourne etc.), scout them well and see why the are winning then pinch those players.

yeah and Ben is on Central Districts list. But at the end of the day we gave him a whirl and we made the call. Its all about giving them a whirl and turning them over and you find one or two that rise up and take the chance. Lets face it all the dudes playing in the state leagues would bend over backwards to get a shot. So they are not going to go easy when given it. So its plain and simple, do they cut it when they bring it? Ben brought it, gave a yelp but fell short. Well, IMO i actually thought he was a livewire who had a good goal sense and was in the right place at the right time type player, who with his slight build was attracting heavy tackles, which nowadays was getting the nod from umps in our FL. Something not to be sneezed at, a player who gets Frees in scoring positions. IMO we pulled the eject button a little to early with Ben.

I agree with all of that. A few that should've gone before Benny boy IMO. Very underrated, smart little player (in a side that quite frankly lacks footballing intelligence & nouse on the whole.) whose positioning and game sense would certainly have come in handy last Saturday night for a start.
Would probably have capitalised on our many forward entries a lot better than our current much-vaunted smalls have this year too. His willingness to run all day is also something we don't exactly have in surplus atm. At the very least, I doubt very much we'd have seen him ambling about half-heartedly looking like he didn't give a shit that our season was on the line, like a few others did during the first half up in Cairns.

what rule? trade?

Nah, as of this year if you are delisted you become an Unrestricted Free Agent. Even if you've only been in the system 2 years. If you choose to walk then you are still subject to the draft. If this rule was in last year we would have McCarthy.

Ideally we should have 3 depth players for each area. We have several back up 2nd ruckman though

I'd be disappointed if a) we didn't have more than 3 mids for depth and b) if we only draft 1 midfielder.

Our depth is poor. But we also have a heap of kids coming through. And we will be recruiting again for 20-23 year olds. Looking at what we have done we are starting to build depth. But it all takes time.

I personally think that the attitude 'we have poor depth, let's look for an immediate fix of guys from the state leagues!' is wrong. We need to stick with the process and build 2-3 players a year until we have the team. We are close, but not there. If we get lucky and get 5 guys great, but that is unlikely. Part of the bad thing about our current situation is that we are playing guys not really up to it. Part of the good thing is that these are the guys that need AFL exposure to work out whether to perservere (Diericx) and to learn what is required - Helbig (and maybe Dusty is still learning that). It is sticking to the process that leads to on field results - eventually. If the Gods love us.
Or we can do Carlton and try and buy success - anyone know a sugar daddy?

Really depends how we go about it. I'd still be hoping we can add 5 kids through the draft which I've worked out would be about pick 9, 27, 31, 49 and I think we will be able to trade a Post/Graham out for a pick around 50ish. Teams need ruck depth though Gus didn't cover himself in glory not many players have come in first game and tore it apart.

Those 5 x top 50ish picks go into getting some top quality kids. Then we can add a Chaplin type in Free Agency and maybe a Hayden Jolly/Piers Flanagan/Lewis Moss type or another delisted GC player for free as they can choose a home if they are delisted. Then I'd be looking at maybe adding a mature state-leaguer to the team as well possibly a Ben Ross (ex-North) from Werribee. That's 8 new players where we'd add 5 brand new kids for the future, 1 older veteran type (Chaplin), a mid 20's state leaguer and a kid in the right age bracket who may be struggling with development without experienced leaders.

Then rookie wise I'd look at maybe 2 other mature agers (Khan Haretuku/Michael Sikora) and maybe 1 promising kid (maybe a small forward like Marvin Warrell) who slides through.

Without doing much we could replace all of McGuane, Connors, Graham, White, MacDonald, Derickx, Webberley, Post from the main list and Miller, Maric, Heslin from rookie list without just going purely kids that aren't ready.

Yeah Nah. I want/expect us to approach it as we have for the past few years, which is very much as you have stated. Maybe less mature age rookies, depends on who is available.
But this will not easily replace "McGuane, Connors, Graham, White, MacDonald, Derickx, Webberley, Post from the main list and Miller, Maric, Heslin from rookie list". Just getting to be AFL standard at the McG level is not easy. I would expect only a couple, at best, of the later picks to get anywhere near it. Most of the guys you list are our depth players. This is where we need more players. Getting that depth is really hard, and we will need a few more years to get to what you suggest.

so going on what you say these delisted players would be able to nominate clubs they want to go to and not have to be drafted?

Problem when those guys come in as depth they don't perform except maybe Matty White who I'd probably keep but with Cameron saying he was playing for his career and then he gets rubbed out for same time as the guy he was replacing then it doesn't look good.

A couple of the kids will be ready-made as is and we have done pretty well out of top 50 picks.

Then you have Chaplin who is better than McGuane.
Jolly would be an upgrade on Webberley.
Ben Ross would be an upgrade on Whitey as he is very much an AFL quality player just had problems with injury that he is now over.
Haretuku would be an upgrade over Derickx as he is more of a forward that can pinch-hit ruck which is what we are asking of Derickx.
Sikora is a well-performed VFL ruckman who is only 23 and an ex-basketballer. Can take a grab and is good at ground level and as he hasn't played much footy he is improving at a rapid rate where as Gus has stagnated.

Not all those 5 kids will make it plus the rookie kid and Gideon but it's still bringing in 7 youth players while changing our depth players over to players who have some upside or in case of Chaplin just better.

Edit: Wouldn't be against keeping McGuane on the list. We could still add Newy to vets list to free up a spot.

interesting?
2nd paragraph of this article

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=130820
A player has served seven seasons or fewer of AFL football at one club, and has been delisted by his club.
The player is a free agent and is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.
The player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.
The player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.
His original club, which chose to delist him, does not receive any compensation pick for the loss of the player.
