It's hard to make a judgement on one year. New players to a club often take a year to settle in, Prestia was very average early on at Richmond.

Both players came to Richmond in a transition year with Cotchin on his way out and Prestia off the boil for the last two seasons. We had some regulars in the midfield like Graham and MacIntosh not helping either. Taranto had a great year and carried our midfield early on before Bolton and in particular Martin started turned that around. Both will be there again next year and quite a few good young players will replace those names mentioned unless they turn it around. Of course if Lynch has not missed the entire year this arguement may not be taking place.

Having said that, 7 years is ridiculous for any player other than marque players.

So true. Youve hit it on the head , apart from marquee players. Its hard to believe you wont get another go at a Hopper or Taranto player in the draft or a trade. Look how much Grundy contract hamstrung Collingwood , still isnt even over yet either.

Buddys, GAJ are on another level altogether and the types of players that you can justify this with .

I think the likes of Taranto, Hopper and Shiels proved that they are not good when the chips are down, they are not capable of standing tall when the rest of the team is not playing well and getting rid of them was a good call in the long run, especially since GWS seemed to have replaced them with players who are more capable of doing the tough things.
I'd say it's clearly more of a case that they have a far better balance in team selection and game plan than they have had previously, rather than it being a slight on those who have left. Taranto carried our midfield all season....

The Tarranto one was a good deal perfect win-win trade, he's literally won the Tigers B a F couldn't do anything more. The issue one is the Hopper one and many said it at the time, did they really need two that the question that's going to be asked, a F1 seems overpay at the best of times too.

Pretty spot on. GWS have not felt the loss of Hopper at all. He was their 5th if not 6th best midfielder and is not ahead of Taranto, Prestia, Bolton or Martin at his new club.

Taranto is a quality player that all clubs would take in a heartbeat. 12+19 is absolutely win-win.

Richmond know what there doing.

Martin signed for 7 years success
Lynch signed for 7 years success

People acting like it's our first time giving out 7 year deals. It's a easy thing to say 7 years is ridiculous for Taranto & Hopper they are on bargain deals, the new CBA deal is going to have the average player wage on 600K a year within 3 years.

Of course it's not but if you don't risks in this game than your club will always go nowhere, I don't believe we would have got Taranto & Hopper if it was going to restrict us going forward, Blair Hartley is one of the best in the business list managers are looking 5+ years ahead.

Yikes, that’s a bad look. Don’t think either would get a game for GWS at the moment either. What a disaster trade for Richmond. Mediocre players locked in for another 6 years. They won’t be contending in that time is the only saving grace if you could call it that.

You don't think Taranto would play ahead of Callan Ward or Finn Callaghan?

And if you take the wrong risks your club also goes nowhere.

Most of them were destined to play out the season in the VFL because our match committee took until the last week to drop players like untouchables MacIntosh, Pickett and Graham that you will probably not have followed them or vaguely heard of them.

When they did get a go they performed well. Cumberland was given a tough time but he has shown he can play. Dow got 3 games in the middle finally at the end of the season and finished off with a 27 disposal game against Port. Tom Brown and James Trezise played the last game and both looked good. Sonsie was in our best in our '22 finals game v Brisbane but stagnated, classy player who should come good. Banks was good in his 6 games.

You may dismiss these players but they are all around 20, all have decent pace and most are very good kicks of the football, one of Richmonds greatest weaknesses. We had about 6 or more senior players this year who were the main reasons for our lack of competitiveness. Some are gone and a new coach will not have the allegiances that Hardwich and McWalter stuck so tight with. So there should be an injection of youth that have been getting ready at VFL level, which is sort of how it should work.

Difference positions and Callaghan is the class mids need. No way Hopper gets a game though.

Sanders from this year's draft would've been a great young player to blend with Richmond's prime (Taranto + Bolton) plus veteran (Prestia + Martin) midfielders. The first round Hopper pick is going to be around the Sanders mark, or Caddy as a forward option.

Lucky GWS I guess. A prelim and getting one of the food draft prospects.

Yep thought the Hopper one was the issue not that Tarranto one two late firsts for Tarranto is a solid trade

Spot on, don’t try convincing most Richmond supporters, they think theyre going to be our saviours.
