ah i remember hearing about this on the 8-4 play podcast but forgot all about it. thanks for the reminder!
i love japanese vgm and like you i feel like this was made for me. hahah

just watched the first three eps. the series is really well done but really depressingly short. the cinematography of the various japanese landscapes is amazing as well.

it's cool seeing electronic artists like kode9, flying lotus and ikonika on there. you can tell they are really authentic in their praise.

my thoughts on each ep:

1:
when you think about how influential hip tanaka is on the development of vgm, it's funny hearing about how it all stems back to him getting drunk in reggae bars.

loved hearing about the development of the gameboy sound chip. that thing was a ****ing technical masterpeice for it's time that was still producing quality vgm into the 2000s

junko ozawa was really interesting as well. how cool is all her handwritten waveform sheets! japanese vgm is like the complete argument to the notion that video games was a man's domain until recent years. yet here's ozawa at day friggen 1 pioneering the artform. not to mention the iconic capcom sound team being like a troupe 16 year old girls:

2:
speaking of the capcom sound team, how can you have no mention of their 8-bit library at all! no mega man??? real bummer
the konami and castlevania stuff was awesome as expected.
loved the sunsoft inclusion as well; very underrated.

3:
jfc i love the music on stage 1 of revenge of shinobi
as expected, the street fighter 2 section was aweome. cool hearing about how shimomura created blanka's theme by hearing a certain sound whilst she was on the train to work hahah.

looking forward to checking out the rest. i highly recommend it as well.
