I really struggled to vibe with the game loop of Eternal so I'm looking forward to going back to something a bit more traditional with this.
My exact feelings. Loved 2016 but Eternal while great wasn't as good for me.

I am loving this early days. Exactly what I needed with so many quality RPGs on the go. First few missions have been a blast and loving the gameplay. My sort of shooter.

I adored Eternal, still think its one of the best FPS ever made. Once I got the hang of the dance I couldn't put it down.

Started Dark Ages last night but only for 30 min. Enjoyed the very little I played but it is very different from Eternal, I do like having the shield. Reckon this will be killer in a different way.

Played through the first mission. Bumped the difficulty up high but found it quite easy. No doubt it'll get harder.

Kinda miss the Eternal gameplay loop already but will give this a decent chance.

Agreed.

Up to level 14. It is a blast to play but finding it much easier than Eternal. I'm not usually a trophy hunter but want to nab every upgrade and now (again at level 14) I feel nearly overpowered, absolutely bossing the heavier demons.

In saying all that the open layout of the levels, literally like battlefields are awesome and there is something really satisfying crushing your enemies with a flail and playing Doom versions of Captain America with the razor shield.

They really did create three very different games in terms of both setting and gameplay with this trilogy.

It took me until level 6 with this one to properly gel with it, but I am enjoying the absolute power trip feeling it gives. The shield and mace are incredibly fun. However it feels like some weapons are amazing and others are useless. Pretty much just rolling the Cycler and the Shotguns while ignoring the rest.

Love the big open levels, but the difficulty is pretty easy on the standard setting. The exploration and secrets have probably been dumbed down a bit too much as well.

Can also add this to the list of games with shit HDR implementation. Between the HDR, the fog/smoke effects everywhere and the screen edge effects when sprinting the whole thing too often just looks like a messy blur.

Hanging out for this so bad. And I have it installed!

Replay of Doom 2016 went well. Remembered most of it too which I thought was impressive considering I last played it in 2016 🤣 At some stage I'll have to go back for all the secrets I missed.

Up to the last level of Doom Eternal. Remembered a lot less than 2016, but have also enjoyed it a bit more than I thought I would. Got the two expansion packs to go too which I've never played before. Will also have to go back at some point for those sweet, sweet secrets.

But before I hunt for secrets I'll be ripping and tearing though the dark ages 😍😍😍 Cannot wait!

Agreed. Phenomenal.

The mixed reception on it truly has me baffled. It is modern Doom in all its glory. People just have such high expectations in 2025.

id are masters of optimisation too, cannot wait for a silky smooth experience.

Wish id engines were as popular now as they were back in the day.

I have a book on the Doom engine with a personal message and autograph from the Icon of Sin John Romero himself. My mates chipped in to get it for my 40th birthday last year. A cherished possession. As far as I'm concerned id have never released a bad game, which is remarkable given how long they've been around. Less good games for sure, but nothing bad.

Got this on release and played about 3 hours of it and it felt kinda meh. Took it to EB for a trade in and they offered me $18 (after buying for $120 only 6 weeks earlier). Told them I'd rather keep it.

Glad I did. Played through all of it this week and was a heap of fun. A really good warm up for Borderlands honestly. Really liked the shield/parry mechanic, was good that they changed it from the last couple of games where it was just run around and survive to stand and fight.

Could've done more with the gun selection and enemy variation but that's something I assume they're waiting for DLC.
