Why do they have to include live Supercoach score in the package? Why can't we have them free?

Because that's one of the few things of value they can offer content wise.

Interestingly, Supercoach (or whatever it is) is a huge traffic driver for the AFL site. The rest of the content and functionality of the site is give or take.

Not in Australia its not. Wont take off.
Yes and no. It started with Australian around 4 or 5 months ago, with 3 months free before having to pay.

I'll admit I'm one of the paying ones for that. $12 a fortnight for the full access. Obviously enough people have done similarly that they are now looking to roll it out across the News stable of papers.

Problem is they are different demographics and totally different papers. The Herald Sun, Advertiser and the other state based papers are rags fit for wrapping chips, aimed at the paper equivalent of the Today Tonight / ACA audience. One it's an audience that is lower socio-economically, so they aren't as likely to have the cash. And two the content of the HS, Advertiser etc. websites is basically the same content replicated across every website, ninemsn, yahoo7 etc. Even the supercoach etc. it's not so different from what's available elsewhere to make it work.

For HS it's just a matter of time to see if it goes down the route of them backtracking or being unwilling to admit they've stuffed it and just not put resources into the HS website and leave it as an unused backwater.

From a business point of view, I'd say they realiize they need it. With more and more people using online news content, Herald Sun are probably losing money with loss of paper subscription. After all who would buy a paper subscription to read yesterday's news, when you can read up to date news on a tablet, or smart phone.

I recently bought the SuperCoach app, and it was useless, as I can't even use it at home unless I have a 3g connection. Its not even that difficult to use the desktop website. For anyone keen on Supercoach, you would have been as frustrated as me, when all you wanted to do was check out Mike Sheehans top 50, only to be presented with a subscription.

I've bought less than ten papers in my life, I read left over papers at work, I read them in public, I get them free at the football, But I don't buy them. there isn't a chance in hell that I'd pay for a media subscription. They need to be more innovative, and make sure they get their news to the people, or pretty quickly, they're going to lose a lot of readers.

My gut feeling is that the marketing gurus are looking at enticing some of the 300K Supercoach users, hoping they can get a heap of young users desparately seeking Supercoach information.

How do you think a club is going to feel, when they want to get a 'good news' article published, knowing its only going to reach a small target audience. Will they go to other sources instead? I would!
