I posted this in another thread, just to highlight how much we have improved, and our list has changed. This is to give people an Idea of how much Dimma has done to the club, from 2010 to 2012, from being the worst side since Fitzroy, to being the most competitive (statistically) side of 2012.

There are a few people out there who question if Hardwick is the right coach for us, but the stats show that we have improved out of sight since he took over. Dimma is a very good coach, who has a very clear vision of where the club needs to go, and also has a very clear mindset on how to achieve that, something that Frawley, Wallace and Co. failed to have. Yes, Dimma has flaws, the glaring one is his questionable tactical nous, and reactive, rather than proactive approach in tight games. However, no coach is without flaws.

Anyway, here are a few things that highlight how much better Dimma has made us:

Dimma's first year was 2010. This was our list:

1. Astbury, David
2. Browne, Andrew
3. Collins, Andrew
4. Connors, Daniel
5. Cotchin, Trent
6. Cousins, Ben
7. Dea, Matthew
8. Deledio, Brett
9. Edwards, Shane
10. Farmer, Mitch
11. Foley, Nathan
12. Graham, Angus
13. Griffiths, Ben
14. Grimes, Dylan
15. Hislop, Tom
16. Jackson, Daniel
17. King, Jake
18. Martin, Dustin
19. McGuane, Luke
20. McMahon, Jordan
21. Moore, Kelvin
22. Morton, Mitch
23. Nahas, Robin
24. Nason, Ben
25. Newman, Chris
26. Polo, Dean
27. Post, Jayden
28. Rance, Alex
29. Riewoldt, Jack
30. Simmonds, Troy
31. Tambling, Richard
32. Taylor, Troy
33. Thomson, Adam
34. Thursfield, Will
35. Tuck, Shane
36. Vickery, Tyrone
37. Webberley, Jeromey
38. White, Matthew

The bolded are no longer on the list.

That is 20 players gone from our list in the space of 4 years. (Dean MacDonald drafted in 2010, delisted in 2012.

Players still on the list from 2010:

1. Astbury, David
5. Cotchin, Trent
7. Dea, Matthew
8. Deledio, Brett
9. Edwards, Shane
11. Foley, Nathan
13. Griffiths, Ben
14. Grimes, Dylan
16. Jackson, Daniel
17. King, Jake
18. Martin, Dustin
19. McGuane, Luke
23. Nahas, Robin
25. Newman, Chris
28. Rance, Alex
29. Riewoldt, Jack
35. Tuck, Shane
36. Vickery, Tyrone
38. White, Matthew

The leaves 19 players, meaning we have half a new list compared to 2010.

Our list this year:

Losing Margin: 18 points. (+3 points from 2012)
Ladder Percentage: 112% (After 5 games in 2012, ladder percentage was 94%) (+18%)

These stats show a stark contrast in our improvement in 3 years, with Dimma at the helm. Considering we were the 'worst team since Fitzroy', the way our averages have increased so much in such a short amount of time shows that we are definitely on the right track, and we are not that far off it, especially when you look at how much the list has changed, in 3 years.

Would think that any game day deficiency Dimma has will be minimised with more experience and improved game plan execution. So at this stage I can live with it. Especially given the changes/improvements in all the other areas.

besides the two new sides, most sides have turned over a similar number of players in the past 3 seasons.

It hasn't taken Kenny Hinkley too long to get Port firing...hmmm.

Remember Hinkley just got pipped by Hardwick to be the Tigers coach. It was neck & neck.

One wonders what the Tigers would be like under Hinkley...

5-0

The very recent HUN article with a few of the Port blokes talking about what it's been like since he took over says it all about the difference between the two as men and as coaches.

Hinkley sat Kane Cornes down as soon as he got to the club and said straight up 'I'm not here to end it, I'm here to hopefully extend it.' He lets him know exactly what he wants, knowing in advance Cornes can deliver what he needs if he has enthusiasm for his footy again, and look a the season he's having, it's the most effective he's ever looked, like half a decade has been rolled back and an extra 40% of footy nouse injected.

Compare and contrast that to what Tuck got put through by Hardwick as we became known as the worst side in history.

Port have got a list which is very comparable to what Hardwick inherited (I'd argue significantly worse), they've just got a better man at the helm, plain and simple.

I reckon it would take a very brave man to bet that Hardwick will coach longer than Hinkley.

Everyone just calm down about Port. Yes they have a good young list and have improved, but anyone who watched them play us at the MCG in round 23 could see that they were a decent side with a decent list and were going to go ok this year.

You can't just say that all your plans have been wrong because one side comes out in a purple patch and wins 5 games.

You realise that they've beaten Melbourne, GWS, Gold Coast, Adelaide and West Coast. Those 5 sides have won 6 out of 25 games this year.

And you're kidding if you think that Hardwick inherited a list as good as Hinkley.

I think you'll find the fitness guy from Liverpool is a big difference, we chased him but he went to Port.

I agree Dimma is making our team more competitive, but he often seems to get out coached on game day. We have come a long way, but it is still painfully slow going. We still keep losing those close matches and that's the difference between good sides, and average sides.

So is it time to get Choco Willliams into the coaching box to help Dimma on game day?

Our base has improved significantly over the last 3 years. Not only because of Dimma, but largely because of the improvements to the football department. If it wasn't for the additional resources i think Dimma (meaning the Richmond) would have been a far worse position than we currently 'enjoy'.

The biggest thing about the Freo loss and not being able to stack the defense is that yes, at that point in the game its in the on field leaders that need to ensure that the players follow the plan, but ultimately its the coaches that need to ensure that the players are prepared to respond to the situation. Given our hype about focussing on finishing tight games, this lack of ability to follow some basic principals has been the single biggest issue for me with Dimma so far in his time so far.

i would disagree that ports list is worse than ours when Dh took over. He has a vastly better list to work with.

Shouldn't you compare the list turn over to the 2009 list? I thought the 2010 list was already being shaped by Dimma through delistings and possibly even recruitment

Very very underrated list Port.
More to do with the a primus regime I reckon.
Granted though Hinkley had to pick up the mess which he has done well.
Probably need to judge it in 17 weeks time.

I think Dimma is competent in the area of managing a coaching team to develop players. Not convinced he is going to be a great coach, but Ill take what we have now as its given me my club back.

If there are shortfalls in his coaching, Id rather look at roles like the one Rodney Eade has at Collingwood.

No coincidence that Hird is going well with a Thompson pulling the strings. Buckley/Eade too.

Really?

I guess you won't have any trouble naming Port players you'd happily direct swap for our best players then?

Or convincing me that the multitude of very inexperienced players Hinkley has performing for him, was somehow different to what Hardwick had to work with?

I honestly thought that was the real reason Choco was coming on. I was a tad surprised he wasn't in the box on game days

After all Hardwick's desire to be coaching from the bench, I figure that's what Choco is doing now, so Hardwick can plan his 'masterstrokes' from above.

I'm sure Hardwick feels he'd be more effective coaching from the bench rather than being a tactician in the box, but if he'd kept coaching from there, sooner or later in our first 2-3 years, the older ex-coaches who know the benefits of the box would have started getting more heavy and vocal in their criticism of his decision to coach from ground level.
