It would be pretty hard to argue with something around a 3 year extension but there's no need to go nuts and go beyond that. A lot can change in that time!

The coaches that Dimma gets compared to the most are Brad Scott, Ken Hinkley, and Nathan Buckley. Here are the numbers for the last 5 years for all 4 of these coaches, with the final H&A position + how far they progressed in finals (if they qualified).

Scott - 10th (DNP), 6th (PF), 8th (PF), 8th (EF), 15th.
Hinkley - 8th (EF), 5th (PF), 9th (DNP), 10th (DNP), 6th (EF)
Buckley - 6th (SF), 11th (DNP), 12th (DNP), 12th (DNP), 13th (DNP)

Compare that to Dimma's last 5 years:

Dimma - 5th (EF), 8th (EF), 5th (EF), 13th (DNP), 3rd (Premiers).

Considering that all of the above received minimum 2 year contract extensions recently (Hinkley and Scott got 3 years), I think giving 3 years to Dimma is more than deserved.

The guy just broke a 37 year premiership drought with a team that finished 13th the year before, that he built from scratch, the bloke can coach. And I think after the shit of 2013-2015 finals failures, he''s hungry for more success, as is the group.

Two years from now. That gives him three more seasons. A lot can go right and a lot can go wrong in that time. If it continues to right he gets another extension. If he has three seasons like Footscray 2017 he has still been nicely rewarded for his efforts this season.
