We've had Dusty, Cotch and Lids before that. Who will be our next 'best' player...

Probably Lalor or Hotton at this stage, both look incredible. I know for a fact that Sydney recruiters raved about Smilie pre draft, their summation was give him 2-3 afl preseasons and he will monster the competition
We do love picking Sydney's favourites

Lalor will be the shinning light..
but it's so important that he brings a gang with him smillie,Hotton, cumming,Armstrong.
if not we are in some trouble

The Lalor gang at sovereign hill

So, Smilie 6-7 years away then?

My list (since i started watching)

Id say Jack and Trent going back and forth for a few years. Rance stiff to miss but cannot put him ahead of dusty 2017

Tim Taranto - 2023 to 2025
Dustin Martin - 2017 to 2022
Trent Cotchin - 2012 to 2016
Jack Riewoldt - 2010 to 2011
Brett Deledio - 2009
Matthew Richardson - 1996 to 2008
Matthew Knights - 1990 to 1995

Injury permitting Lalor 2026 –> the foreseeable future

Time and decision making under pressure already absolutely elite

The way he brings his teammates into play and makes those around him better is a thing of beauty

Funnier things have happened who would have thought Shedda would have become the player he did, amazing how much some players improve as the team grows, unfortunately he's not even best 23 yet.
very true on the shedda comment.
The same as Lambert, who would have though he would go on to become so ultra important to the team.
Astbury aswell
time will tell with sonz in 26'

I do think Lalor will be a gun but has he shown anything yet to suggest he is the heir to Dusty? His debut was great but so was Dean Polo’s. He was fairly quiet in his other games which is normal and fine for a debut season. Just don’t get the news to overhype him when he hasn’t shown evidence of that next level we assume he all has yet

Was very good vs Bris and had the game on a string during the 2nd qtr vs North at the G. Just looks a class above. I can't think of anyone else at Tigerland currently on the list who will be better than him for the longer term foreseeable future (from the time Lalor has played 50-60 games). TT is obviously currently performing better as are some of the older guys, plus Seth but it's only a matter of time imo...

It's too early to tell. Hotton showed flashes of brilliance fresh off a knee reco, great smarts, composure, agility and skills with insane marking for his size and could be anything. Lalors debut with a broken jaw was enough to salivate over. Armstrong could be our next 600+ goal kicker. Smillie must be chomping at the bit to show what he's capable of. Gibcus has all the gifts to be an elite KPD. Cumming has some massive wraps on him so he could be anything.... Maybe one of our later picked players could come from nowhere like prime Mark Couglan (who sadly was tracking to be a Legend of the game, before injuries robbed him) so it's gonna be an exciting next couple of years seeing the cream rise to the crop.....

Cannot have lids in any year. He was in the top 2 or 3 but never I thought number 1.

Just my own opinion but if not for injury, i think we could of had someone else who could of easily been pretty close to Dusty in the 2000s. Mark Coughlan. Bloke was an absolute jet prior to his horrendous injury run.
I think Lalor could be the one but im very optimistic on Grlj.
I watched some of the games he played at the 'G' he was as strong as crapps and as good as Dusty in avoiding oppo tackles...not with a straight arm, don't argue...but sheer physical strength bursting free...
One game I saw him burst from the center after winning the footy from a heap of carltoon players in the center...he only had a single carltoon playa run to stop his advance to goal...fecking Cogs just ran through and over the top of him and trampled him into the MCG turf like a rampaging wilderbeast...all without changing arms carrying the footy...
Feck what might have been if he had never got injured...

Who you putting in 2009?
I was about to ask the same question. Lids won the B&F in both 2008 and 2009. You can't rate him above Richo in 2008, but I struggle to think of any better player for us in 2009. Regarding your suggested list the only possible quibble I could have would be whether Cotchin was our best player already in 2011. I think it wasn a toss up between him and Jack that year.

You cannot teach what he did that night...He kept running and assisting, and he should've had no tank back then...Especially after a broken jaw, in pre-season one...Won us the game...Absolute freak...
