I had a look and there is no thread for this great band (sort of a one man band consisting of Knopfler) and I thought it would be worth creating one. I thoroughly enjoy their music and rate Knopfler as one of my top 5 guitarists. I saw Knopfler live a few years ago and he was brilliant.

Gotta love the 80's. :thumbsu:

I owned Love Over Gold and Brothers In Arms and both were very good albums.

Lots of great songs like Money For Nothing and Industrial Disease but for me Brothers In Arms (the song) is their best by some distance.

Love em. My Dads favourite band so grew up listening to them. Was the 2nd concert I ever went to - Dire Straits @ Entertainment Centre in 1991 for the On Every Street tour. I was 9 years old. Still remember it clear as day. Wet Wet Wet were the curtain raisers. Sultans of Swing was epic...went for about 15 minutes. Have all their cds and about 4 or 5 videos - Live in Barcelona, Alchemy, BIA Videos and Money for Nothing DVD. There was a live video my dad taped off Channel 9...must have been in 86 for the BIA tour in Melbourne I think...watched it almost to death growing up. Your Latest Trick was my wedding song.

Unfortunately didnt go and see Knopfler when he came here 3 years ago. We ummed and ahhed about it but stupidly chose against it as I thought it would be mostly his folky stuff, but apparently it was fantastic.

Favourite songs: Brothers in Arms, Ride Across the River, On Every Street, Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing, Your Latest Trick, Private Investigations, Tunnel of Love. Too many classics.

Brilliant band. Simply brilliant.

Just looking at some info now....I cant believe they played 21 consecutive shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre for the Brothers in Arms tour. Thats ****ing mental. Thats gotta be the most shows in one place for the one tour ive ever heard of.

Love this version of Money for Nothing

Love this version of Money for Nothing

Brilliant.:thumbsu: The greatest intro to any song. :thumbsu: The only guitarist I like listening to as much as Knopfler is Clapton.

I just found these videos. :thumbsu:

The thing I love about Knopfler is he just looks so non plussed as hes playing. Hes pulling off these ridiculously quick riffs and he just looks 'yeah? so what' and does another one thats even quicker and more ridiculous.

I have always wanted to get into these guys.

I have seen that video the OP posted before and it is very cool.

Underrated guitarist is Mark Knopfler.

yeah great band. i really enojy listening to them.

probably in my top 20, or at least not far from it. mark knopfler IMO is easily in the top 10 rock n roll guitarists of all time. how electric is the atmosphere in any room when the solo of money for nothing starts up at full ball :):) one of my favourite 10 seconds of music from any song.

MK is a ridiculously good guitarist, and I would say 'average' vocalist... But to be even 'speaking' anything at all while playing the breaks he plays seems impossible in itself! The vocals seem like a bit of an afterthought at times.. But still, some classic tunes.

Did I mention that guys' guitar playing? Sheesh.

been watching knopflers layla duet with clapton. the guy is ****ing ridiculous

Funny just been rotating DireStraits again in the car (bought a bargain cd from jb)...funny that i posted in this thread 3 years ago too. My girlfriend loves Your Latest Trick but not his singing hehe.

If anyone hasn't listened to their first self titled album then unplug the jukebox and do yourselves a favour. It's their best album by far. All killer, no filler. You can certainly hear a lot of influence from JJ Cale.

For me:

1. Dire Straits
2. Making Movies
3. Love Over Gold

Brothers in Arms - too much rubbish but some good tracks
Communique - boring as shit
Anything else - shit

I own Brothers In Arms, Making Movies, and Love Over Gold.

Love Over Gold would be the 'best' I think, but Brothers in Arms gets more play because it's easier to listen to. 'Your Latest Trick' and 'Brothers in Arms' are just beautiful. Lots of love for 'One World' and the extended (album, Sting) version of 'Money for Nothing'.

But 'Private Investigations' and 'It Never Rains' are a different beast altogether.

Making Movies never really did anything for me.

I agree 100% with this. At their best, they were brilliant, but I hated their mid 80s synth stuff. Still, it was popular !

I love Mark Knopfler's soundtracks for Cal and Local Hero and have really enjoyed some of his folk stuff in more recent years.

Brothers in Arms was definitely their most successful album, it was massive when it came out in the mid 80s, but it doesn't really do a lot for me. It has some good songs on it but it also has that big overblown, overproduced mid 80s sound with too much cheesy synthesisers. The whole album sounds kind of soulless and hasn't really dated all that well.

My favourite Dire Straits album would be Making Movies. Just a classic album full of great songwriting, musicianship and emotion. The production on that album doesn't have that overblown mid 80s sound like Brothers in Arms and hence it has dated a lot better, still sounds great today.

So many great tracks on that album.

My favourite is Tunnel of Love which is a f***ing epic song.

Dire Straits was the first live band I ever saw (back in 1986 at Football Park). Was a fantastic concert, and I do like a lot of their songs, but that 'On Every Street' LP was a **** of infamous proportions. They should have broken up after 'Brothers In Arms'.

The guitar on 'Sultans Of Swing' is tremendous. I'd love to hear Knopfler playing Layla with Clapton!! I gotta YouTube that shit....

Alchemy> All other Dire Straits' albums. :p

'Telegraph Road' is such an awesome song:
