Dire Straits

If anyone hasn't listened to their first self titled album then unplug the jukebox and do yourselves a favour. It's their best album by far. All killer, no filler. You can certainly hear a lot of influence from JJ Cale.

For me:

1. Dire Straits
2. Making Movies
3. Love Over Gold

Brothers in Arms - too much rubbish but some good tracks
Communique - boring as shit
Anything else - shit

Nailed it. If you like Dire Straits but don't have the 1st album, you are kidding yourself. Best by long way.

Money for Nothing is classic. Just how many cds did that one riff sell!

It irks me that political correctness ruined the lyrics from money for nothing.

Reckon you are very harsh on Comminique.......and not a fan of Brothers In Arms, I think it stank.

Personally I'd have Love Over Gold as number one.....less tracks so its a bit "prog=rock" with long epic tunes, but I really rate this album

My dad was a an avid listener of dire straits and Queen and I love both, It was really great when he turned up the car cd player to the tunes of Walk of life :D, I also have some old records , and incidently I have got the Brother in Arms record which was one of the first CD for many people on record. :D

Mfavourites are Sultans of Swing, Walk of Live, telegraph road, Romeo and Juliet, portobello belle, Brother in Arms, well there is hardly a song I don't like :D

Bit surprised that there is love for Walk of Life. One of the truly lamest songs in history and pretty much the reason why Dire Straits lacks some credibility. Dire Straits ended up being the Nickleback of the 80s because of this sort of stuff.

Sounds like the only thing you have listened to is the best of.

First album def number 1 for me.

Making Movies also a big favourite. Tunnel of Love is a great opener

Love Over Gold would be my third favourite. Starts well with Telegraph Road but then cant sustain it.

Knopfler's Local Hero soundtrack also worth a mention.

I have got LPs of them too, but they are vinyl records , and I only have the best of as mp3 format therefore I know their names better :P don't see how Walk of life is lame, it has a great tune :D. also what sort of credibility do you ask for. it isnt as if they are a casting band :P

Not sure if srs.

Not as bad as Walk of Life but still incredibly lamothon.

I find it immersive and soothing. The last 2 minutes just love the guitar line over the keyboards and the 4/4 beat. It all weaves together and then fades out...magical.
Dont know what lamothon means. oh you mean lame

That little ****** with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy, that's his own hair
That little ****** got his own jet airplane
That little ******, he's a millionaire

That?

The first concert I ever went to was Dire Straits @ Rod Laver in 1991 and I still rate it as one of the best I've ever seen.

Like a few people have mentioned, I also 'found' Dire Straits as a result of my father being a fan. Making Movies and Love over Gold were on high rotation in the cars casette player.

Twisting by the Pool is by far their worst song.

Yep. Walk of Life pretty much has a similar sound and feel to TBTP. Both incredibly lame songs.

I remember I got Making Movies on tape when it came out and a few years later Twisting By The Pool came out. I actually filled in those little holes on my casette so I could tape onto it and at the end of side 2 there was enough room to fit TBTP. What was I thinking?

Twisting By The Pool is a fun little pop song and came out as an antidote to Love Over Gold, which was a very serious, almost morose album. Knopfler just wanted to break the mold a bit.

I never minded the song in that context. I sort of got it. Theres nothing wrong with simple pop songs, not every song has to have critical acclaim. Its just 50's rockabilly.

Walk Of Life however I found to be very lame.

No love for the song Heavy Fuel, heres some of the lyrics

''last time I was sober,
man I felt bad,
Worst hangover that I ever had,
It took six hamburgers and scotch all night,
nicotine for breakfast just to get me right"

I just listened to the whole 5:05 minutes of the Dire Straits collection while downing a bottle of Bombay Sapphire (theres a youtube of all the albums in one upload). Money for Nothing a standout track. The debut album a cracker, although I get a bit tired of the slight country tone. All in all an underrated band

For good reason, On Every Street was shitehouse.

Dire Straits are a great band but they got progressively worse with each album.

They should have quit after Brothers in Arms. Not a big fan of BIA but it still had its moments, like these two tracks.
