The Andrew Lovett situation made me think.

All clubs have a few recruiting decisions they would prefer not to think about. Which recruiting decision was the biggest setback to your club?

For Saints probably most would say Lovett but I don't think that is going to have the long term impact that swapping Ian Stewart for Billy Barrett had. That decision cost us a couple of flags I reckon.

What recruiting decisions have cost your club most dearly?

Thorp/Selwood of course.

Outside of that, Rioli/Myers was a massive screw up by the Dons.

Is this thread specifically for 'recruiting' or does 'drafting' fall under that category anyway?

For Brisbane, I'd say we'll know by the end of the year...

You could very well argue picking up Travis Johnstone wasn't a great move (paid to play in the QAFL for a decent amount of time last year), though he has at least contributed more than Cameron Wood probably would have. Hopefully he has another break out year this year.;)

Dean Laidley as coach. :p Who chased Thompson and Hay as well as a colostomy bag full of crap in Picioane, Green, Shane Harvey instead of Davey, McKernan back from Carlton, Leigh Brown as part of the trade for the departing Pickett, the sickly McConnell from the Eagles, Mark Powell who never bothered to come over.

You guys have no idea how uplifting it is to be free of him.

it's all good in hindsight but richmond taking fiora over pavlich is something which haunts them.

for us overlooking simon black (local WA boy) has hurt.

Also was reading last year that West Coast were very interested in Adam Goodes but took Andrew Williams and Todd Holmes with two picks in the 10 in front of where Goodes went to Sydney.

Will overlooking another local Black be equally hurting? :p

One that springs to mind for me is pick 3 & Clinton King to Richmond for Pick 7 & Steve McKee... Pick 7 turned out to be Danny Roach who played 1 game for us and didn't register a possession. He did get a tackle though! More recently I think we did a three way swap with Hawthorn & West Coast, gave away pick 7 & Bo Nixon for Chad Morrison & Pick 10. Pick 7 was Jordan Lewis and we got Chris Egan at 10. That one hurts!

Most of the trades and drafting done with Parkin (post-1995), Brittain and Pagan in charge.

Only the Matty Lappin and Adrian Hickmott trades and the selection of Andrew Walker (injured since 2007) have paid off.

Poor recruiting and a bad year with injury in 2002 are the reasons why we bottomed out between 2002 and 2007.

Seven drafts down the drain between 1996 and 2001.

As it turns out, Goddard was the only real miss from the draft penalties.

Wells isn't worth a glass of warm beer.

Sorry burst your bubble but Wells is a better player than Walker..

A team would have to be in pretty dire straits already for one draft pick to be considered "disastrous"
Trading Fevola could be a case in point. I know its actually a step forward for them to get rid of him. But last year they were coming, this year their going. It could de-rail any finals chances they had for a few years.

The Saints decision to trade #6 and 31 for Barry Brooks may have cost them dearly. There was plenty of talent in that draft that could still have been useful last September if they had used the picks.

But I think one draft/trade alone cannot be considered to be disastrous, so I'd nominate Fremantle for dismal drafting and trading over the first few years of the century.

Saints would consider the Lovett trade to be disastrous at this point in time ..nice try at denial tho :thumbsu:
