Thieves have robbed six exhausted volunteer firefighters while they slept after battling fierce blazes in Gippsland.

The Country Fire Authority volunteers were recuperating at a Traralgon motel on Monday night when their rooms were looted, police said.

The firefighters were sleeping in six rooms at Murphy's Motor Inn, on the Princes Highway, when thieves broke into each of the six rooms and stole wallets, mobile phones and clothing.

"The firefighters have returned out to fight the fires today, so we haven't been able to speak to them about it," a CFA spokeswoman said this morning.

Police believe the thefts occurred between 10.30pm and 11pm on Monday night.

The firefighters had been battling bushfires in the area since Sunday.

Anyone with information about the thefts that may assist Traralgon police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
