In soccer they get new ones every game. Thats why some players swaps theirs, but in the AFL do teams get new jumpers each game or do they have to wash it and reuse it. Serious question, I'm just curious.

I am sure that they would get new jumpers every game but I am not positive.

I remember seeing a TV piece on the inner sanctum of the Bulldogs this year. They had a shot of the uniform guys
(volunteers) and it looked like they were washing/reusing/sorting player jumpers.

May have been because I believe they needed to replace all the players jumpers due to sponsors logos being too large eg the costs(or initial limited supply) of new jumpers meant they had to be re-used where possible.

Pretty sure they get reused and stuff, unless they have special one-off jumpers that go for auction or have been damaged or ruined during game time

As I understand it normal home, away and clash guernseys (with no promotional/special significance) are reused several times throughout the season, with about three or four new sets used for an entire season. At any one game, each player with have between one and three back-up jumpers, incase of damage or blood. Players who wear long-sleeved guernseys have a couple of back-ups.

Promotional/one-off guernsey sets are made with 2-3 spares for each number (including players that don't play in the particular game). They are usually auctioned off following the game.

I think it was last year when Aussie Home Loans took over Wizard, whose logo was on the front of Collingwood's home guernseys. The guernsey set for the first part of the season were already made, so fabric Aussie Home Loans patches were used to cover the Wizard logo. After a couple of games, the patches began to discolour and go a shade of brown from their use. It wasn't until about round six a new set of guernseys were brought into use.

Another example is Hawthorn's Nick Holland about five years ago. His home jumper had no AFL logo for about five or six games. I'm surprised the AFL let Hawthorn get away with this for so long, considering they almost fined Setanta ÓhAilpín in 2008 for accidently wearing his old Carlton shorts (with the AFL strip down the outer sides) instead of the newer style with a single white stripe.

That's quite interesting, also with the Grand Final AFL logo, I noticed that Hayes' AFL logo (behind the GF "stick on" logo) on the GF jumper was without the "A F L" on the red oval at the end of the drawn Grand Final

The red part is still part of the patch. Patch was made up of two layers, the bottom red part and then the top part in white. Underneath the patch you would find a normal AFL logo.

The AFL is a Billion dollar industry and players have to reuse their jumpers. Its pretty sad i reckon.

Jumpers are definitely washed and re-used each week.
Some one-off/clash jumpers even continue on for more than one season.
Essendon's clash jumpers were the exact same jumper for two years.
In at least one case, Brent Stanton, he wore James Hird's clash jumper when he changed numbers.
Home jumpers are replaced each season. In most cases there are changes to jumpers eah year anyway, so fans will buy the latest jumper.
Sponsors, collars, club logos and designs all change.

Yep, I play footy with Jeremy McGovern and Brad Bootsma's kids (you might not remember those players, they played around a hundred games each for Fremantle in the early naughties), and they've got a few of their dads jumpers that they were. I talked to one of them about the old Fremantle away from 2002, with the gradient-anchor..

Certainly back then - a player got 7 jumpers - 4 home, 3 away/clashes. The player basically chose the length of the sleeves. It was up to the jumper man/player when a new jumper would be brought in. If a player went through their allocated number, they were allowed one more at a time.

How is it sad? Imagine making 22 jumpers for each player a week from each club. How many jumpers would you go through in a year?

16x22 = 352 jumpers a week.

so 7744 jumpers a year! Not including finals. Plus all the backup jumpers for each player. It would be pathetic to make a new jumper every game now wouldnt it?

I agree. Although, if a club did only use one kit per game, perhaps they might donate them for charity.

No it wouldn't be pathetic cause they just auction it off for charity. Which most clubs do except this time they will have more to sell. All for a good cause. Fans win, Charitys win.

So why did you seem to suggest (although your post was quite vague) it was pretty sad?

For 500$ you can buy an eagles matchworn jumper, in 06 they were selling like hotcakes so most decent players were wearing a new one each week at a hell of a profit.

I think the eagles are now giving the east coast eagles their used jumpers now

The problem I see with this is the football memorabilia market would be flooded with match-worn jumpers and after a while they would lose their appeal and prestige. The more match-worn jumpers that are sold and are out there, people will eventually be willing to pay far less as they won't be as much of a sought after item.

I too think it would be ridiculous to expect clubs to have a new jumper for every player for every single game. As long as they are in good condition without rips or damage, they should be able to go at least three to four games (or even more) without being replaced.

I understand the AFL is the highest standard of Aussie Rules in the world, but it would be pointless, greedy and wasteful to have new jumpers made so every time a player gets to the game on a Saturday, he can take a fresh, new guernsey out of the plastic, pull off the tags and put it on.

how do teams auction off their 150game guernsey or whatever, melbourne has done it several times. Maybe they use a new one for special games as well...

Can anyone give a definitive answer on how many guernseys they use per game in 2016 compared to, say 10 years ago ?
Per game? 1. Which is the same as when footy began.
Unless it's a special occasion and they want to sell them, then up to one per quarter.
As far as how many they go through per season.
They have two sets of Home and two sets of Clash/Away.
Teams can use up to another 4 designs through the year. (Essendon; Anzac Day, Country Round, Dreamtime & Clash for Cancer)
In these cases I believe they have two of each of the jumpers as well. One in case of blood rule.
Some players request long sleeve jumpers, but fewer and fewer.
One of each is ordered for Home and Away.

So in summation.
Two sets of all six designs, plus the occasional long sleeve.

Pretty sure Paul Chapman got done wearing 2007 shorts in 2008

I'm surprised about the Nick Holland thing. Never knew about that. I did a Google search and actually found a picture.

I think you will find that these days many players will use two jumpers in a game. Was evident the other day with the west coast equipment guy walking around the change room at half time offering players a new jumper, not all of the players took him up on his offer but many did.
