RICHMOND
Even though we trounced our three final opponents the most goals we kicked was 16 against Adelaide.

In the home and away season we did not kick more than 11 goals against the top 10 sides with the exception of Melbourne where we kicked just 12.

The 6 games we lost we managed to kick 10 goals on 5 occasions and 11 once. In these games we had huge periods where we struggled to kick goals.
Look at adelaide we kicked just 4 goals in the last three quarters
Fremantle just 5 in the first 3 quarters
Wb 6 in the last three
GWS 4 in the last 3
Syd 5 in the last 3 quarters
StK 4 in the first 3

Its a similar theme with the teams where we had close wins under 3 goals.

It has to be a worry that we could only kick a decent amount of goals against the bottom 8 sides even then we only kicked 20 plus goals twice in the season.

My answer to that is that we got better offensively as the season wore on and as the players started getting used to the smaller line up. That is why with the exception of Geelong at Simonds in Round 21 and the GWS game that was in the rain, our scores have been much higher since the Round 16 game against St Kilda up until the Grand Final.

R17: 112 vs Brisbane (Etihad Stadium)
R18: 64 vs GWS (MCG) - in the rain
R19: 98 vs Gold Coast (Metricon)
R20: 93 vs Hawthorn (MCG)
R21: 66 vs Geelong (Simonds Stadium)
R22: 155 vs Fremantle (DS)
R23: 122 vs St Kilda (MCG)

QF: 91 vs Geelong (MCG)
PF: 103 vs GWS (MCG)
GF: 108 vs Adelaide (MCG)

We especially started improving offensively once Townsend came in for the Fremantle game and showed the boys how to be composed going for goal.

Also remember that the Richmond coaches were not planning to go with the short forward line. We got injuries to our tall forwards so it took time for our forward line to find another answer. We did and I think that answer can still work this year.

Yes. Take note that this OP is the preamble and our poor recruiting with the lack of talls.

The stats show the OP is wrong. In my opinion, sub 70 points for a game, in good weather conditions, consistently, is a worry. Scoring 70-100, and winning, is acceptable, and 100+ is the goal.

Your stats show 112, 98, 93, 155, 122, and importantly, 91, 103, 108 in the finals.

All is good with our scoring ability.

Yep. The only worry with our scoring was the period when we were trying to adjust to a smaller forward line (Rounds 6-16), but that was resolved thereafter.

We did. Up until R22 when we brought in Jacob Townsend and then promptly scored 25, 19, 13, 15 and 16 goals. (average 18.4)

Broken down into quarters we kicked:
8 goals: 1 time
7: 5
6: 1
5: 2
4: 4
3: 2
2: 2
1: 3

We did this against the sides ranked 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, and 15th defensively over H&A (average ranking 8.2 - average ladder position 6.4)

Also, this was done while IMPROVING defensively, so it's not as though we loosened up too much - season average points against was 74.3, in the last 5 it was 59.8.

Over those 5 games we averaged a win 115.8 - 59.8 (average 56 point margin)

And in the gamed you pointed out, we usually had a quarter where we scored heavily, 5 or 6 goals. Obviously something was breaking down in those games that meant our scoring was reduced. But we clearly figured that.

In short, OP, I think you need to go back and rewatch those 5 games. We completely dominated a set of opponents that would be about as difficult as any random set of 5 you can pull from any fixture could be, all over the field. Trust me, you'll love it.

We do lack a bit of forward potency but it’s not really our game, we don’t want a shootout, we want to keep it tight and grind out results.

That said, towards the end of the season with Townsend in the side we started kicking decent scores. And if Castagna can clean up his posiessions and set shots I don’t think he is too far off kicking multiple goals on a weekly basis

FMD.

Scoring opportunities. From defensive pressure delivers entries inside 50.
Then ratio of scores / entries. Scoring efficiency then is the issue.
Ratio of goals vs points.

Then points for vs points against (there’s a clue for any sign of an issue!!!).

If we don’t generate entries we can’t score.
We generate plenty of entries.
So no we don’t have a scoring issue.

If this is indeed an OP lead in to trade in more talls, you’re dead to me.

Spot on.

2017 strategy of defence wins games.

Have recently sat in on defensive and attack strategies for 2018, I say no.

Yeah it’s a tough one isn’t it. Really interesting and tough question to answer.

Ty for that , I do love a well qualified response , in short , no we don’t have a scoring problem and we have other emerging talents in Bolton & Moore to keep the starting 6 honest and change things up ,

Yep, if only we still had Ty... would solve all our scoring issues

:D

I’d like to think we have some flexibility too, hammer could be used at times to have nank hold up an end as a tall forward and I’m also hoping , have nothing to go on at this stage ,,that one of the kids in CCJ, Bolta or Miller might show a bit . Gee it’s been a while since we had a tall emerge from the ranks ,,,this could be it
