Former Cat dishes it up for Tigers

DAVID Mensch made a stunning return to the club where his football journey began on Saturday, kicking 10 goals in a Geelong Football League match against St Albans.
The 33-year-old was crowned best on ground in his first game back at the Tigers' den, since leaving as a fresh-faced teen to play 158 AFL games for Geelong.
Glad to be home but feeling the weight of expectation, Mensch yesterday said he was unusually nervous before the match but was obviously thrilled to celebrate a timely Easter surprise with his young family.
``I haven't seen a lot of GFL over the past three or four years playing up-country, so I was pretty nervous before the game and feeling the expectation (to perform), coming back,'' Mensch said.
``So I really wanted to have a good start after a big pre-season and get off to a bit of a flyer.''
That he did. Against an inexperienced St Albans unit, Mensch marked well deep in attack, across half-forward and was even influential in the ruck.
The ex-Cat said he looked forward to a new lease of life playing up the ground, after being restricted mainly to the goalsquare in his three seasons at Mansfield, where he kicked 94 goals last season.
``So long as my body holds up. I'm getting older now,'' he said.
Importantly for Grovedale and its coach Tim McGrath, Mensch and fellow towering recruit Michael Poon are key additions who have helped transform an emerging Tigers' side into a finals force.
He hopes Saturday's 10-goal haul is a sign of things to come.
``He (Mensch) was good. He took a few pack marks, a few one-on-ones and gave a few off as well, so he took his opportunities and brought others into the game,'' McGrath said.
Fellow key forward Mitch Barrow is recovering from chicken pox and may not play for a few more weeks.
