Being such a great team these days, do you ever think back to the "dark ol' days"?

For example, last night. A wet & cold MCG against Melbourne. I thought back to that wet & cold MCG against Melbourne back in '06 where we lead most of the night & lost the game by a goal.

Similar sort of thing for that Adelaide a month or so ago. We were pantsed by 92 points back in '06.

It's just ineteresting to "flashback" and see how far we've come.

Anyone else?

Ah yes....the night Josh Hunt clapped himself prior to missing the match sealing goal from 25m out dead in front.

Being a Geelong supporter used to be a nightmare didn't it?

Walking down the hill toward the ground from Jolimont station last night, the rain started and I definitely thought back to that game against Melbourne where Josh clapped.

In fact, it happens pretty regularly. Against Hawthorn I thought back to the horrible beltings they dealt us; especially the one at the end of '06. Against the Dogs I thought about how they used to be a real pain in the arse, beating us at home when they shouldn't have and Brad Johnson running amok. Against Freo I thought of that generation defining match where they beat us at KP...

It's just so comfortable being a Geelong supporter at the moment. The threads titled "...the game we usually lose" really sum up the way we used to approach every game as supporters. Now, it's such a joy to go to each game knowing that something ridiculously out of the ordinary is going to have to happen for us to lose.

I'm just lapping it up. It's not going to last forever so I'm just enjoying it while it lasts.

I really rate this thread actually and I'm gonna put a list of flashbacks together.

Rd 22 1987 vs Hawthorn (KP)
- We had to win to make finals for the first time in my life (that i could remember). We were 6 goals up in the last quarter and somehow lost the unloseable game. I cried all the way home.

vs Fitzroy 1989 (PP) - Led by 5 goals at 3 quarter time and i remember sitting with my old man listening to it on the radio as the Lions came storming home and beat us by a goal...once again gutted.

vs Hawks 1989 (PP) - Led by around 9 goals at halftime and still managed to lose. I was gutted.

vs Richmond 1990 (KP) - We were 4-2 going into the game and had won 4 straight after an 0-2 start and were starting look like we might replicate 1989. We dominated the general play but kicked 9.28. We lost and the season went down the drain.

vs Eagles 1991 (Subiaco)
- Top 2 teams heading into the game and it was seen as the grand final preview. We went down by one point and it cost us 2nd spot on the ladder for the finals.

2nd Semi vs Hawks 1991 (Waverley)
Ablett out suspended. Trailed for most of the 1st half but dominated the second half and kicked out to a 17 point lead (from memory). Then the Hawks came back and Darren Jarman kicked a goal out of his @rse from the boundary to win it. Following that Trevor Poole and Andrew Bews both missed open goals from about 50 m to win it.

Prelim Final 1991 vs Eagles (Waverley) - Ablett out suspended. Trailed all day but made a massive comeback to get within 3 points in the last. We lost and I was in tears again.

Final vs Nth Melb 1997 (MCG) - We finish 2nd but are made to play at North home ground under light. Back then North were known as night specialists. Carey ran riot and we lost.

Final vs Adelaide 1997 (AAMI)
- As if we werent already screwed over enough by the finals system we are then drawn to play Adelaide away. We dominate the game and Leigh Colbert isnt payed THAT mark. If we had won that game we would have won the flag....once again I am gutted.

Rd 22 vs Hawks 2002 (TD)
- A win needed to make the finals but somehow we lose for the 5th time in the final 6 rounds.

Prelim Final vs Brisbane 2004 (MCG) - We outplay the greatest team of the modern era easily but due to out lack of a forward line cannot put the score on the board. A few young players make crap decisions late in the game and we lose.

Semi Final vs Sydney 2005 (SCG)
- Nick Davis.....that is the most gutted i have ever been.

vs Eagles 2006 (KP)
- We all know the story...what made this worse was it was aginst the f'n Eagles of all teams. I was fuming.

vs Kangaroos 2007 (KP)
- At the time i was disgusted. But it turns out this was the greatest thing that ever happened to out club....would not change this game for the world.

Canny 30, that's a great list....i can concur with all of those games, and toss in a couple more that also hurt like hell, and remind me why we should enjoy all the fruits of this spell of dominance.

Preliminary Final, 1980. Collingwood 13.15.93 d Geelong 13.11.89.

We were always a goal or two down, but we were never out of the game. A comeback in the last quarter saw Bruns have a snap late in the game, alas a behind only.

Preliminary Final, 1981. Collingwood 12.10.82 d Geelong 11.9.75.

Despite the 'Sidebottom Bus incident' we actually led that game for much of the time, and extended our lead in the last quarter to 11 points, before a Daicos inspired finish saw the Pies again stymie our Grand Final push. I hated Waverley after those series, we played one final at the 'G' and won it, and lost all four at VFL Park.

1983 Rd 5 Melbourne 18.12.120 d Geelong 16.13.109. An Anzac day game at Kardinia Park saw us kick the opening six goals of the game, only for Templeton to kick 8 and the Dees run over the top of us, we opened the season 4-0 and this would have made us 5-0 in our first year under Tom Hafey.

1983 Rd 14, Richmond 10.10.70 d Geelong 10.9.69. Cats led by almost 5 goals until a goal on 3/4 time by ex Cat Graeme Landy, before the Tigers kick 4 goals to nil in the last quarter, pipping us by a frustrating point. Geelong would lose 7 of the last 8 games.

1987 (twice) Brisbane d Geelong. In a year we finished 11-10-1, how Geelong could lose twice to the then pathetic Bears was a mystery, and was an early precusor to the whole concept of the 'The type of game we usually lose' mantra we had until Rd 6 last year!

1988 (twice) Geelong lost consecutive home games to Sydney and St.Kilda, each of whom were a single win and bottom at the time we played and lost them. The Swans match was by a few points after a Robert Scott shot after the siren hit the post, from a tough angle, and the Saints game we also lost by a goal. Both those games were early in a season where at one point we reached 6-4, before losing the next 6 games!!

1993 (whole year). The pain of finishing a mere six premiership points off TOP spot, while lamentating about us being in 7th place, watching a final six play off in full knowledge they were all glad to see Geelong, conquerers of them all in previous weeks, were not among them. Talk about 'what if'!

There are many more, but i am using this period to just absolve all these wound of the past and soaking in the glorious, glorious feeling of victory! And it is indeed sweet, assuaging the sins of previous fathers.

AH yes. 1993. We were the form team in the comp and didn't even play finals footy...

Outstanding posts by canny30 and Catsace. I will add the following:

1990 Round 1 vs Hawthorn (Waverley): Following the heroics of 1989; we faced a Round 1 Grand Final rematch. After three competitive quarters; the Hawks blew us away by putting on 19.13 (127) compared to our meager 1.5 (11) and thrashed us by 115 points (Dunstall booted 12 goals.) "Here we go again!"

Nice list....a lot of that list I'm not aware of because i was too young).

I was at the bolded game.

I was standing at the city end and the crowd went bananas because it looked like a goal.....then about 10 secs later we realised it was a poster.

I was sitting in the city end forward pocket on the home side of the ground at that game. After Scott kicked the ball the crowd in the Hickey Stand (the old one) reacted as if it was going to be goal, so I started jumping around in celebration. I actually missed seeing the ball hit the post because I had stopped looking in that direction. My family and the people sitting around us believed that it had gone through for a point. It wasn't until we had walked back to the car and turned on the radio that we realised it had actually hit the post because the commentators were discussing it. I can remember a radio commentator (can't remember exactly who it was) saying that he believed one or more of the Sydney players were shaking the post as the ball hit it.

Yeah i thin it was the reaction of the Hickey stand that set off our end too.

Rod Carter shook the post, i remember that because a big deal was made out of it during the week. That was back in the days when the big footy stories were actually to do with on field stuff.

I used to love the old outer at K-Park....there was the wet section and the dry section.....just a great atmosphere. I hoipe they never completely get rid of the outer at K-Park.

A great example is Croke Park in Dublin....it is a massive stadium that holds 85,000 but they have kept one end as standing room....i hope we can do the same.

I've attached a picture....my fav stadium in the world...and I've seen a few.
