understand 2001: a space oddessy besides stanley kubrick?

i sorta get it and can stand it until it comes up saying 'jupitor and beyond infinite' then i have no idea whats going on

and i only half get the big black thing

So I read the book, made it a little easier to figure out
So I bought the soundtrack...

OK my understanding of it is that the 'big black thing' is an object left there by aliens to help advance human evolution. Everytime humans find a Black Oblisque (sp) they evolve further in their development:

1st object - they evolve from apes into thinking humans.
2nd object - they evovle to knowing more about space travel to move from the moon to futher planets.
3rd object - they evovle to another level of existance.

That's about all I understand of it.
