I just finished typing this email at work on hotmail. When I went to send it, I received this nasty "Borderline Manger" message. It only seems to happen on stuff I take ages to type and send eg. emails on hotmail, posts on BigFooty etc.....It is such a pain as sometimes you need to minimise stuff so colleagues and managers cannot see what you are up to.

Just wondering if anyone else gets this at work

yep it always happens at uni. Do a check with one of the IT staff where you work or where you study.

I used to think you just have everyone sucked in, but i'm really not so sure...

Anyway

I like to think as myself as being pretty computer savy, but this is one thing that has be puzzled from time to time. Just what gets stored and what can be seem by IT managers, etc?

Is anyone an IT Administrator? I'd love to know just what can be seen and what can't.

Anything and everything can be seen by the IT staff, its just a matter of if they really want to

Where im working now, if i want i can access anyones email and read through it, its a question of trust really

And if you wish to break to law!

Basically that is it. If the IT manager really wants to, they can see everything you do internet wise. See what sites you go to, read your emails etc etc

Privacy laws prevent reading of emails however. (I am sure it does not stop some of them!).

Of course it depends on the size of the company, and whether the IT managers could be bothered tracking a person down and speaking to them about it.

I reckon a lot wouldn't care because they'd do it themselves, hey iceman ;) ;)

^^ Yeah, they do read stuff. Last year, I was sending emails with not-so-subtle messages to a guy, at school. People started finding out about what I was writing and what was being written back, and turns out the teacher who monitors our internet access had been reading them, in front of students. For kicks. Sure, the content probably wasn't appropriate for school hours, but there was no swearing and no direct use of strong language, which would have been picked up by the swear filter, so since no report had come through to him, he shouldn't have been allowed to read it. But he did. I'm sure people do it all the time, for kicks, just like my teacher did.

So my teacher broke the law? Hmmm :D

That pretty much sums it up. I used to work with a girl who checked the Internet logs at the company I worked for at the time. There was a lot of disgusting stuff, and some that would have been borderline illegal.

So if your company says they will check the logs for illicit Internet use, its probably worth believing them - at least on anything that would be borderline on a moral or legal basis

they can do more than check just your email and the websites your visiting...

my work, a global corporate, can also tell what you have stored on your computer... ie, for things like mpegs, avi's, and the one they are targetting at the moment, illegal mp3's.....

my work a couple of months ago, issued a "warning" email, in regards to downloading illegal copies of copyrighted material (such as mp3, avi's, etc...).

apparently they were contacted by the Business Software Alliance, the Recording Industry Association of America and Mediaforce Copyright Infringement, representing Time Warner Entertainment Company and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, advising that they had detected the presence of such illegal copyrighted material..

as such, my work has issued a warning to all employees, globally, that if they are caught downloading or are in possesion of such material, that at first it will be a warning, counselling with your manager and a note in your personnel file... Second offence is IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL, in line with our HR policies regarding this type of thing....

tell you what, I **** myself! A bit ashamed to admit it, but I've been guilty of downloading mp3's, and as soon as I read that email, I quickly deleted everything I had on my computer..... shows that these corporations such as Timer Warner & co are serious about cracking down on all this illegal trading going on.....

so, be careful, what ever it is you do...

Being a corporation, i'm assuming you computers are networked? Then it makes you wonder why you were so surprised they could see what you had on your computer!!

I work in Child Care, we don't use computers therefore I wouldn't use the net in a normal work day, so none of this really applies to me.

However I know a few people I chat with who log into chat rooms while they're at work, and I mean some of the stuff that's said is fairly quarrelsome or just plain disgusting. I don't see a problem with personal e-mails at work. internet forums etc, but I'm unsure whether I'd actually go into a chat room while I was meant to be working.

Sucks doesn't it??

We should be able to use computers to develop kids minds, and keep ourselves occupied! :D
