Hawthorn is the most interesting work in progress in the AFL IMHO.
I have a few Hawks mate and hear their frustration about Dawson etc, but if I was a Hawks supporter - I think I would be more than prepared for an out of the 8 performance in 06 as long as experience was being gained. Hard to look forward but you have been patient for a while now - the rewards are coming.
The boldness of the club last year to get the 6 picks in the top 22 will reap a rich reward in the next 2 - 3 years.
With the likes of Hodge, Williams, Croad ...there is a real platform....if the likes of Dowler/Muston/Elliss come on - its what will push you over the top. Dawson, Campbell, Franlin, Roughhead, Lewis ....will all be better for 2006 under their belt. Guerra was a great pick up also and has another 5 years of footy in him. Spider's transition will help the likes of Campbell and Bailey greatly.
Trading Hay and Thompson - will make you super competitive in 2 years time, rather than an average team for the next two - I know what I would prefer.
Now I'm certainly not writing you off, but if you dont make the 8 there is another top 10 pick to target (or trade if an absolute cherry come along but I think you will stay smart and continue to use the draft).
Hawthorn is a team I will watch closely - the exciting thing about the slow build through the draft is your flame will burn a lot longer. The Dons are facing a tough time in the coming years and will need to rebuild their stocks.
Your in a good position and I hope Clarkson gets a short term deal 2 years to see if the man who has had the kuhunas to take the build approach, gets a chance to show what he can do.
Just an independents football fans view.
