Courtesy of Drummond in another thread, playing in the SANFL reserves on the weekend:

According to a gun poster at SAFooty, "Crows Irish recruit Brian Donnelly was a strong target for the visitors playing deep in attack". He kicked 2.1 (and was adjudged 3rd best)

Having seen the video highlights of Donnelly playing for Glenelg Reserves last week, he's come a long way in a short time and there's definitely something there.

He's still got a long way to go as he needs to force his way into Glenelg's first 22, consolidate at that level, and then improve enough to play AFL.

He's got this year and next year to do it in, and at his current rate of progress, I'll stick my neck out and say that he will make it.

While Donnelly kicked 2.2 on the weekend playing in the goal square, he had only 5 possessions for the entire game. It is good to see his progress, but he does seem to have a long way to go. The highlight's package did show him moving quite well, so lets hope his improvement continues.

Rookie Ricky Henderson on the other hand kicked 1.2, but had 15 possessions playing across the forward lines. He looks a certainty, barring anything unforeseen, to be upgraded come years end, if not before.

Donnelly has come from a -long- way behind the eight ball. I remember going and watching him a week after he arrived, he couldn't kick the ball to the trainer 15m away reliably. He's gotten a lot better but still looks awkward to me, like he's never 100% sure that what he's trying to do is going to come off, or if it's even what he should be doing. No question though, he's had a massive improvement and seems to be doing better each week.

He's a long way off still but if he continues on this arc of improvement he should make a league debut by the end of the year.

It will be a sad day when Donnelly replaces Sellar in the bays firsts.

Well for Sellar anyway

They're both first round picks.

Sure, Sellar was a first round pick in a national "super" draft, whereas Donnelly was a first round pick in the international rookie draft, but hey, they're basically the same thing right? :o
