watching the two best sides battle it out in that last day in sept, proved to me that to be the premiere you sure as heck dont need Polly Farmer in the side

Mark Blake
Rob Campbell
Bent renouf
Ottens (ageing warhorse)

we already have in stock a couple of talls that could find this level, our problems in other areas are more acute...Add another quality midfielder or class Tall before we waste a R1 pick on a true ruckman...If CC has learnt anything at all in being a list manager he will already be well aware of this as he researched the make up of ea and every premiere over the years. Rucks can be developed as long term options, history has shown that this is generally the proven method

Agree with the sentiment...usually.

Trouble is, Richmond has got itself into a bit of a bind having little more than Simmonds and a bunch of kids who aren't looking like world beaters, and as such, we really need to get a 'sure thing' this year.

Generally speaking ( and I've said this before ), I figure the relative chance of a ruckman coming good is less closely tied to the draft position than is true of other positions ( or in other words, you're more likely to get a good one late ), so I figure rookie one every year, give him 2 years to prove himself, and if he doesn't look good 'next'...You only need about 1 in 3 to work and you're in gravy.

Now, of our current list, I think Patto is worth sticking with, at the least he's a second ruck who is good for a big body around the ground and Graham & Cartledge still might come good, but it's looking unlikely, and Putt is supposedly a forward...Simmonds is holding up for now, but the older he gets, the more likely injury or just fading form will take him out so we need to get coverage, which takes me back to throwing a high pick at a ruckman.

Having said that, lets see how the draft pans out...if Vickey is gone, I don't see anyone else who meets that need who is worth a first rounder, ( NicNat isn't a 'sure thing' & McKernan/Trengove are too short for full time ruckmen at AFL level ).

Agree.
i would prefer to take the best KP or mid rather than a ruckman with pick 8. I wouldnt mind using our 3rd rounder on a ruckman.

Just wondering guys is there any good young ruckman going around in the wafl ,sanfl or qld leagues we could give a preseason to???

I'm always beating this drum... a strong midfield will make a ruckman...

Pick 8 Midfielder PLEASE.

geez cogg, you should be in the list mgmt team with that sorta clarity:rolleyes:

to easy BJ. I will even do it for nothing. Tell you what though, my cv hasnt got all the bells and whistles needed to become a list manager as you are well aware. For some unknown reason, the same list managers do the rounds year in year out, ****ing up more often than not, then after they have, they are pounced upon by the next team, for their "expertise".
Have said it many times, it defies logic when some of these guys get a gig, after their CV is littered with big fat Fs. ;)

If the best available player at pick 8 is a ruckman, then take him.

we must have had the same kind formula in the 2006 draft. We knew that Tiv was close to retiring, so we wanted the best available comedian, and we swooped and have been developing his slapstick comedy in readiness for his debut. ;)

Come on down Steele Sidebottom. And hopefully Swift with 2nd round. Try and trade hard for Griffin, have a crack at Max Bailey, draft a ruckman with a third pick. And also must get MITCH BROWN...please.

Future Midfield of Deliedo, Cotchin, Foley, Tuck, Sidebottom, Swift, Tambling etc... Looking very very strong if we could get them boys. :)

Forward line of Mitch Brown, JR, Hughes, Morton, Collard, Gourdis?, resting midfielder, would also like the junior Motlop that played on grand Final day, definately worth taking a punt on him.

The concept of an 'abstract' best available is foolish. Several players will usually be roughly the same level, so 'type' will always come into it.

As an example, we'd almost certainly pass on Hurley, even though he'd almost certainly be the highest rated player if he slipped to us...We just don't need another key defender.

There are exceptions ( eg, Rance last year ) where a quality player slides until they're just too good to pass on ( even if you don't want that type ), but they're rare.

If there are a group of players available at pick 8 that we all rate the same, then we pick the one we need the most. I wouldn't see us passing on Hurley. He is the full back we need to release Kelvin Moore to play as a rebounding defender. We would have surplus which would allow us to then trade one of our tall defenders for a draft pick.

Ottens is one of the best ruckmen in the league and carried us to the 07 flag and almost again in 08.
But it's no suprise that Richmond fans don't rate him

i wouldnt say rance was a good example at all, even though he was expected to be drafted higher.

one of our major targets for lasts years draft was a key back.

recruiting rules 102 after dont draft ruckman with No 1 pick is dont draft key defenders with first R pick. Footy graveyard is littlered with these duds that couldn't get a kick in a stable failing to rise to the occasion at AFL level. R1 selections are for gamebreakers my friend..That is Mids or Key forwards...deeper in the draft the Mcguanes and dean cox's can be found

Nope, not if a defender or ruckman are better prospects than the midfielders or forwards on offer.
