Don't Talk about Being Direct!

I know this is a Crows board but I had to comment on todays Nth Melb V Carlton game.
Had nothing to do so went and watched - well if you think the Crows play wide sometimes, you had to see this to believe it.
I doubt the corridor was used more tyhan 3 times during the game - both sides simply amassed players behind the ball and then proceeded to run the ball down.

It was difficult (not impossible) to go straight down the centre as both teams went via the hot dog stands - is this now part and parcel of how the modern game is to be played - FFS I hope not!.

BUT I can tell you the Crows have never been as bad as these two teams so lets not complain guys.

The othere point :( Is Daniel Wells a footballer or not - was simply a class above everyone else IMO

Spot on observation WW. I couldn't believe my eyes watching that today...arguably one of the most indirect matches of footy I've ever seen.

Gotta admire the spirit of those Roos though.

Daniel Wells is ALLLLLL class and how about that mark of Sav's? Definite early contender for mark of the year.

Definitely agree, the amount of shots from 60 degress to the boundary line was unbelievable.

However, I think that the flooding attempts of both teams contributed to the lack of action down the centre corridor. Players from both teams had no choice but to run wide to create space.

Whilst we are mentioning players from the game, Kouta looks to be getting back to his best - carved the Kangas up at the clearances today and his presence around the ground was great...pity he didn't have any friends. Jarryd Waite looks like he will be a star, possesses those James Hird like abilities to be able to create time and space for himself. That goal he kicked in the first quarter was amazing.

just thought I'd throw something out there:

do you think we are too obsessed with playing straight and direct? It is the quickest route to goal and the easiest to defend against.

no one ever mentions the last point, that it is helluva lot easier to man up and contest the team going straight through the middle.

Its not so much the lack of directness, its the chip possession game I dont like. Everytime the ball is in the air there is potential to turn it over. ( and what I am about to say is as dangerous)At a guess the ovals are approx 160m long goal to goal? Thats 4 comfortable kicks , if every player knows to position themselves along those lines the automatic thing should be belt the hell out of the leather , whether that is alongt the centre corridor or along the boundary I think doesnt really matter. Its the netball pass/possesion game that irrits everyone.I then think that allows teams to man up on us and thats where possession can be turned over. How many times have you seen a short 15 metre kick end up being spolied and the opposition kick long into their forward line?

I have said this a few times on here... the closer to your goal the ball gets the more pressure is on the opposition backmen.Creating pressure creates opportunity, if as a team you know what to expect you position yourself accordingly. How frustrating must it be for a full foward to see the ball 60-70 metres away and start to lead only to see a chip kick 15 metres sideways, he then leads again only to see it move 30 metres in the opposite direction.I think Modra was so good because he knew once McGuinness got the ball he knew it was coming his way and he led accordingly.

It is a good point:
Today everytime the player coming through the centre (via hot dog stand) looked up to the top of the square the defenders had 3 against one.
It got so the first instinct was to kick wide rather than even look to the top of the square.

To play long and direct IMO you have to have stay at home FF and CHF types like Tredrea. Perrie is a roaming CHF completely different player, you also need a nippy forward pocket.

Today Eddie Betts made a marvellous debut and showed the value of a crumbing forward to any team.

Long and direct gives the opposition no time to get numbers behind the ball, but it also depends on the quality of your side.
If you only have 2-3 go to forwards, the defenders of the other forwards can afford to zone off to assist the CHB and FB, not having to worry about their direct opponent.

Bidg Sav still showed the value of kicking long to the top of the sqaure - top effort today.

And it happened today! both teams played safe possession footy only to have it stuff up atsome point.

More possessions more chance to stuff up and as Cornes said once " do you want a short mistake (which comes back over your head) or a long mistake (which takes 2 kicks to get back to you and allows players to man up)

Seems to me if you are going to turn the ball over make sure it's as close to our goal as possible not 20 mtrs from you!

Exactly. Lets take a kick out situation from a point. Short kick to a non zoned player ..ok fine the ball is 35m from goal. The next kick is either a long 50m kick down the wing or the middle. The ball is now 85m from goal and 2 good kicks from a score being registered, or you have another short chip of 20m and its turned over , a few strides and bang 1 kick on goal.
