G'day Pies . Don't be worried about losing to geelong, its a good to lose during the year, you find out all you need to know for when you get them in the grand final. Which I think you might.
Then you hit them with pressure ,they hate it and you work out how to kick goals when your in your forward fifty and not succomb to their backline pressure. They really are pussies when the chips are down. Look at this as a good thing, it'll never happen again this season, good luck.

I agree that people shoudn't go into meltdown over this game and I don't think Collingwood supporters will but opposition supporters will obviously enjoy the Collingwood loss. Whilst criticism of certain players is warranted I don't think this game will have any lasting consequences later in the year. I posted this on the main board earlier this week:

I think this game matters only for the 4 points, like you I don't think people should try and use it as a crystal ball for September. I don't think people should put to much importance on isolated games but more on a teams form over a longer period. If we beat Geelong, whilst it would be good for confidence, it won't mean much later in the year, likewise if Geelong beat us. People do like to put added importance to certain games as it makes it more exciting to watch but this isn't really a season defining game. It should be a cracker game though, it is always good viewing 2 in form teams go head to head.

I'm still confident of our chances this year and think we can be a force in September. We are a strong side on 7-2 sitting second on the ladder, there really isn't a cause for major concern yet.

Well I am still worried. It was a major test amd we clearly failed the test. Moreover we lost the game in the latter half of the Championship 3rd quarter. That is certainly in my view a worrying sign given the importance historically of that quarter when it comes to finals and especialy Grand Finals. I will be even more worried if we lose to them again later in the year. Just because certain things took place in the past in relation to home & away games, that does not guarantee that the same pattern will emerge this year re: Hawthorn in 2008. Moreover, Geelong can improve with the inclusion of Ottens, Corey, Rooke amongst others, etc, etc. I am also woried by our atrocious kicking for goal. It costs big-time.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I believe we need a completely different approach to the game next time we play them(rd19). Trying to outmuscle and outlast them clearly doesnt work for us,only if we revert to our freeflowing attacking game style that has been so successful for us this season we'll have a chance of coming up trumps IMO.

The Cats are better then us. But we are a very good team and we won't continually get beaten by this side. We will beat them at some point, we just need to beat them when it matters hopefully this year in a PF or GF where they don't get a 2nd chance.

I recall Leigh Matthews reflecting on the 2003 QF loss to us by the Lions, after they won the flag. He said he was thinking before the QF 'you just don't keep beating good teams no matter how good you are, sooner or later they will get one over you'. They had beaten us the last 3 times we played them. It proved right on that occasion but we didn't knock them out and they came again and pumped us.

I don't for a minute feel all is lost. Focus now is to qualify top 4 and start again.

Malthouse is terrified of them, that's the main problem. When the boys play the same as they did against Carlton and Freo we can knock any team off, but as soon as we play teams that Malthouse thinks we can't beat he reverts to the terrible plan that ultimately costs us games.

Until Malthouse grows a pair and allows the players to take the game on like they do against every other side we'll keep losing. He said it last year:

"If Geelong are at their best, and we're at our best, Geelong will win...Because they're better"

Terrible attitude for a coach to be giving the playing group.

Last year he said that and I was surprised at the time. I notice he has steered well clear of saying this. Purely 'they are a very good side' or 'benchmark over the last 3/4 years'

Fact - Collingwood still sits second on the ladder, and comfortably in the top 4.

Fact - Collingwood is still the 2nd favourites for the flag.

Fact - Collingwood was beaten by the best side in the AFL in Round 9.

Fact - Collingwood kept Geelong under 100 points for only the 2nd time this year.

From AFL board.

Yep, he admires Geelong but he revealed what he really thinks with that. He doesn't think we have the talent to take it up to them, and he may be right, but as long as he gets scared and has the players play so timidly, so to avoid losing instead of playing to win, we'll lose against Geelong every single time.

Don't get too excited for the rematch, I doubt he'll change tack.

We entered the game hoping we'd bridged the gap from last year, and it is apparent that we haven't. It's very disappointing. We have improvement left in our list, a lot of it actually, but hoping for improvement is not the same as being on level terms.

The other frustrating component of the analysis is that we again picked an odd side to play the Cats. I'd hazard a guess and say that every other game besides the Saints and Cats games, we've fielded three marking forwards. We've gone away from that in those two instances and kicked less than a third of our usual score. Maybe MM genuinely thinks this is the only way we can beat Geelong, but if that's the case maybe we should play with this structure week in, week out, rather than as a bewildering gimmick whenever the opposition looks tough. Maybe he wants to give our team an excuse before we've played the game. I don't know, but it's exasperating.
