Apparently Kevin Rudd talking in Mandarin when being interviewed for Chinese TV is showing off....

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,22711218-5005962,00.html

If you're talking to a potential audience that don't all speak your language, but you're fluent in theirs, surely it only makes sense to talk to them in their language. Aids in communication...

They're getting more and more infuriating each day and more and more likely to get voted back in each day. I don't get the swinging voter.

No you've got it all wrong. If you want to present professionally as a foreign minister or a PM, you a) Dress up in suspenders and high heels and b) Get filmed doing tragic karaoke songs at APEC conferences.

Downer is an expert in these matters and Rudd should really take this on board. How dare he appear on Chinese TV speaking Mandarin, the gall of the man. Next thing he'll be trying to speak English to Australians.

Exactly...and Downer is a hypocrite, I remember the time he met the British royal family and the conservative press over there were very impressed when he chatted with her majesty. The fact he was willing to speak like a dimwitted, out-of-touch, pompus, inbred old queen, they believed helped that meeting no end.

downer makes an excellent point

rudd should be arguing the semantics, pointing out how rude people are and running interference non-stop like tony abbott

then liberal can say he's a "me too-er" on their health policies. whatever the hell they are.

How do you say "working families" and "clever politician" in Mandarin?

Because it seems when I turn on the TC he never says anything else ...

Plenty in Bennelong though.

Of course, the people in Bennelong would probably never have heard of this interview if the Marquis of Mayo (definitely not the Duke of Adelaide given current polling) hadn't gone off and sooked about it. It wasn't on Australian TV after all.

To be honest, I'm totally baffled about what Downer was trying to achieve with that little sook - unless he was trying to remind the Chinese in Bennelong that Rudd can speak Mandarin. Which sounds like a fair stab in the back.

[Edit: unless of course that station's carried on Fox?]
