Pick 71 - Cam Sutcliffe - 17yrs, 187cm -

Cam has been playing for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL. He played 9 League and 12 reserves games this year. He is very balanced running midfielder with exceptional work rate. He reads the game very well and is very good at stoppages with his hands. His spread from stoppages is exceptional. He is a terrific character and the hardest trainer at the Eagles. Cam averaged 19.6 disposals a game at SANFL Reserves level. Cam tested exceptionally across the board at the state combine:

81 Running VJ.
3.02 20m time.
8.11 Agility.
24.63 repeat sprint and a
15.3 beep.

Congratulations to Cameron Sutcliffe of Woodville-West Torrens Football Club, Round 15’s Macca’s Cup Most Valuable Player.

The 18 year old, who wears guernsey number 12, had 34 possessions, seven clearances, nine tackles and one goal in the Eagles’ victory over Sturt on the weekend.

Judges said Cameron was the most consistent player on the ground on Saturday, exhibiting a cool head under pressure and strong leadership skis.

Well I like the sound of that - one thing we as a team don't have down well is our ability to spread correctly at stoppages, though good coaching helps in that regard I suspect.

Hi just thought I would let you know you have a great pick here. I have witnessed him first hand and have played with him a couple times. He just has that commitment and the team he played league in won the cup so it was hard to get into. I have no doubt he will thrive on the open spaces of pattersons with his endurance and ball skills. Good get!

Well I have to say that picking Sutcliffe does confuse me a bit.

Had well balanced DC results where endurance was really good but the rest of his results are reasonable without being outstanding.

Only averaged 11 possesions in SANFL league and 19 at ressies level and they're not numbers I'd be getting excited about if thats what he brings to the WAFL. While being a yr older than the rest of the draftees.

I know its early but on those numbers I'm not really convinced.

Woodville-West Torrens talent manager Shane Grimm says Fremantle almost rookie-listed their final pick in Thursday's national draft, Cameron Sutcliffe, last year.The Dockers chose Sutcliffe at pick 71. The midfielder played eight games in the Eagles team which went on to win the SANFL premiership, but wasn't selected for finals. Grimm said Sutcliffe's fitness was the key to his game and he was unlucky to miss selection last year.
"I was sure he'd go to GWS as a rookie and Fremantle were also seriously looking at him," he said. "He missed out on selection in the South Australian under-18 team last year but he kept working. "He runs all day and was the best trainer that the senior team had. He won all of the repeat 1km runs that we did and most of his times were around three minutes flat."I think he could play as a midfielder or running half-back.
"The good thing is he is a good kick on both sides of his body."

Considering the players that were still available it was a stupid pick. Ala Hall, Bucovaz and Bollenhagen he could be gone very soon. Hopefully not though, sometimes younger players excel in a better environment.

The answer is in the quote dummy. Because of the players who were still available. Shane Nelson, Tunbridge, Manson even, Frost, Boseley etc. I really liked Nelson who was a top thirty prospect with extreme pace and skills who find heaps of the footy. Like you said the later picks are speculative so why wouldn't you play it safe with players who have been linked all year in the top 40?

Come our first pick in the rookie draft all the decent players could be gone. The stupid comment belongs to you.

How do you know Sutcliffe would not be taken by those picks either? Basically, all you are saying is that Nelson is going to be a better player, so unless you are seeing into the future, it is a stupid comment.

Are you an AFL recruiter? I'm not, but unless you are I'm gonna assume that a player rated in the top thirty prospects all year is going to be a safer pick up then an overage player who would of stuggled to be picked up in the rookie draft. Also are you arguing that a KPD like Frost or Boseley isn't needed by the club? And in a weak draft would it not be a fair idea to pick up a mature prospect who is ready to go? And why not take a small risk on a forward who is just about as talented as they come in Masnon? He is from WA so we would have a better chance at keeping him. Or Tunbridge who was obviously rated by GWS last year as a flexible forward/back KPP.

I love how you try to argue by only listing one of the players I mentioned. If the club really wanted Sutcliffe I bet we could of picked him up in the rookie draft. Sod off!

GWS have the first 8 picks in the rookie draft, so we might've known they were interested in him. We've obviously seen something in him and sounds like we've been tracking him since last year. Perhaps we threw him a challenge to develop his fitness last year and he's now done that.

The thing I like about our 2 late picks is that they're both known for being hard workers.

Looking forward to seeing how all our picks go at training when they get here next week. Offseason optimism has kicked in early this year!

The GWS concessions have pretty much ended now so they don't get the first 8 picks in the rookie draft. Our first pick is 8.

De Boer's twitter says the boys arrive tommorrow so will start training Monday I assume, along with Zac Dawson most likely.

If he was rated in the top 30 picks, why did he not go in the top 90 picks? Ask yourself that question.

I know the recruiter must see something in this fella, but it's the most uninspiring bio I can remember from a draftee. I'd be amazed if he ever gets a game.
