Douglas is medium forward and played a very good game over the weekend. Seems strong enough in the body on body contests and holds his marks.

Not aware of the draft camp restrictions but can confirm that by Friday. Seems like a good idea which will keep the focus on the better players

Also honest opnion who would you take first out of Johnson and Schultz given the option or is there another tall you yourself rate higher than the two besides Goddard.Tim Walsh from the Knights thoughts on him???????

You can acquire knowledge on junior football the same way you find out about senior football. You just have to look a bit harder or listen a bit harder. Depends on what you want to know.

The AFL site, Real Footy site, Football Victoria (TAC Cup) site and other affiliates often run articles or information if you are interested.

An easy starter is the AFL site pathway program

you can see a few sections there to click on which is a good place to start

Otherwise your regular media ie TV, Newspapers, radio will publish or broadcast info from time to time. Info becomes more readily available around draft and under age championship times. Watch a few games if you have a chance. Sometimes junior footy is more fun that seniors. In fact it can often be if your team is losing!!

I think there is some merit in that. If you have a local boy and an interstater of comparable ability and similar positional capability you should go the local boy. But lets face it. If you know the club is in dire need of a key forward do you pass him by to take the local boy who might not be quite as good?

Sure some kids get a bit homesick. That could be because of their personality or upbringing or it could be because of the way the club has looked after them. Swans have been pitiful towards some of their juniors in this regard. However just coz a kid comes from interstate doesn't mean he can't become a club legend or mainstay. Look at Bradley and Kernahan at Carlton or Black and Lepptisch at Lions. All interstaters who became/are legends with their clubs.

A lot of this talk of homesickness (unless your Anthony Rocca) is a load of tripe. In many cases it is just a player manager beat up to get his client more $$. Football nowadays is a profession and evryone knows how the system works. The system has been in place for the footy lifetime of the kids that are going to be drafted this year. There is no shock if a player has to go interstate. The first couple of years are the hardest mainly coz kids are leaving home for the first time and there are educational and social issues to consider. It is up to the club to ensure the players transition is a smooth one and that it stays that way.

Part of the reason players like Nathan Brown is so valuable to us. The kids love him!

4/5. Schulz or Schammer (both from SA)

Schulz is a highly rated key forward at 193cm. Had a disappointing U/18 champs (as Polak did the previous year). Sure to be snapped up early.

Schammer is a 175cm rover and was named player of the U/18 tournament. A certainty to go in the top 5 by many experts.

Now here's an interesting thought for you all.

SUPPOSE Schulz goes at 4. Schammer could arguably be considered the next best player available. DO WE TAKE HIM? Many of you say take the next best available player. What if he is?

Well from what I can gather is Wells,Goddard and Salopek will all be gone by our pick which obviously gives us a chance to get a tall that we havent had for a long time.The way I see it is if Clayton thinks that one of Johnson,Schultz,Gilham(big wraps on him from a friend),Brennan or one of them can make it as a top key position player then we should take them regardless of the quality of the midfielder.He really has to be sure though and thats what he is paid for.At 175cm Schammer is really too small IMO.There has to be a limit that is ridiculous given our list at the moment.I always maintain we should go for the best but in this instance it is our first chance to get a tall of note for a long time and if the difference between the best player and the best tall is minimal then we have to jump on it.

I havent kept anywhere near as close an eye on the comp this season as I did last year and have only seen cannons games and the rest of my knowledge is based on the word of friends who play in the TAC cup.

Here is a my tentative top 5 doc but I dare say this will be way off

1-Goddard
2-Salopek(go for the vic kid)

Then I go blank.If Wells goes at 3 to the saints then it gets interesting.Richmond say they want a midfielder.If they do then it gives us a choice of any of the highly rated talls.

Doc and Old school give me your assesment of Gilham and also the next best midfielder in your opinion besides Schammer.

Saw him play one game where he dominated across half back by taking about 12 marks. He would be a project player because he is so lightly built but could develop into a very good footballer at the next level.
There is plenty of good midfielders in this draft however, I am not sure who I would nominate at this stage. Will have another look at the database tonight.

I rate Gilham a big chance to go in the top 10. For me he would be the best key defender (CHB) in his age group in the land. Skinny as a rake (Saddington type build) but beats bigger bodied opponents because he has tremendous defensive nous. Knows when to go goal side on his opponent or when to stand left, right etc. Very good at outmanouvering his man. When he fills out he'll be a terrific player at senior level. Versatile as well. Can play as a marking forward. Also has leadership credentials.

Midfielders. Don't think it runs very deep this year. Some of the guys who should feature fairly early;

Blake Grima 179cm - very creative user of the ball and blessed with excellent vision and ball handling in tight. More Steve Wallis in style than Scott West, for example.

Jason Winderlich - 184 a dasher who can play half back or forward. Like him more as a flanker than a mid. Looks lazy at times but rarely makes a mistake in possession.

Ron Corrie - 186cm - explosive half back who loves to run forward and kick goals a la Rohan Smith. Comes from NT. Is pacy and elusive like most aboriginal footballers and gets a lot of the pill. Kicking needs a bit of work.

Callum Urch 183cm - I think you all know about him by now. As hard at it as they come (reminds me a bit of Chris Scott) and never stops contesting, tackling spoiling etc. Uses the footy very well and a strong mark. (love him)

David Kellett 178cm - from SA. Big raps on him from everyone in the trade it seems but I'm not as big a fan. Very busy player around the packs and racks up lots of stats. I question his use of the ball a bit and his ability to influence a game when it is hot!

Couple of taller utilities I liked were Daniel Bell 187cm, Luke Jericho 191cm (more a forward) both from SA, Josh Rudd 188cm, Luke Brennan 188cm.

Smokey!! I know how much you love em Dogboy. Try Joel Perry 191cm developing key position player. Not a genuine smokey. He went to AIS but is probably a player who would feature more strongly next year.

For our 2nd pick. If Michael Johnson is around we should think seriously about him. For my money every bit as good as Paul Johnson but with arguably more upside to come. Also played in a poor team so he didn't get fed well when playing forward but he made things happen. Terrific skills for a big fella!

Gilham is only 190cm, isn't he?

Not really big enough for a key position. I would like to see his growth plates scan.

yep its 7 clubs for the canberra draft camp but there are also mini state based camps for blokes who have less clubs nominate them. im not sure what the minimum club number for that is though. i think they were at monash uni last year in victoria.

If he cops an injury and it slows him down somewhat then it he wil be very limited as a footballer.

Carlton boards says they want a midfielder, a key defender, and a ruckman/forward. Saints and Richmond want midfielders, obviously. What does Freo want? They have been so crap for so long they have good heaps of good young players in all positions.
Do they need any more ruck prospects?

At any rate, I dont think any of the clubs before us are screaming out for a key forward.

I think we will go for Goddard and Wells with our first two picks...if the draft was held tomorrow I'd be almost certain that we'd take these two. They are the two standouts IMO, yes Wells is from WA but I still hope we go for him because he's better than Salopek, Johnson, Gilham etc.

He'll probably get rubbed out for it and that's it for him for season 2002. Does that count against him?

There are plenty of kids whose attitude isn't good enough, how do you rate the screening of that? I guess the odd party animal slips through.

To some of the blokes that look at the U18 footy closely, does it frustrate you to see talented players who just haven't got the head screwed on right?

Brown is a good young player who plays the game vigorously so I am not sure that he has done too much wrong.
Seems to have a good attitude so no problems there.
The Stingrays are also well managed so they keep any egos in check.

Yes it is frustrating when a player seems to not give his all or is too easily distracted.

Article in todays paper about who the Doggies should draft and they nominated Gilham. Given that Clayton prefers the skinny kids he must be a good chance for us to grab however, I'm not sure that he will develop into a key position player. He might end up like Sam Power by being more like a tall flanker.
I have seen him play 7 times this season and some of his games have been great. Mature for his age as well.

There are some incredible talents around who have completely wasted it but some who were not nurtured properly aswell by there u18 clubs.

There is a guy playing in the Sunbury ones at the moment who honestly is that much better than some of the players drafted of late it is staggering.Old School,Footyman and Doc you might remember Brent Reilly who is at Adelaide now and this kid is the exact same type of player as him and he used to give him absolute lessons.He is only 18 and got best on ground in a final last week in what is a pretty high standard of football.The cannons dumped him because he couldnt make it to pre season training as much as they wanted but the kid is an awesome talent and a few clubs are looking at him now.

There are a few more well known guys that spring to mind like Nick Aloi the brother of Anthony that could have made much more of there talents.

I can't speak for the Doggies but i know a player's character is the number 1 priority for Geelong coach Mark Thompson.

He said that the only reason he drafted young stars James Kelly and Steve Johnson was because in his visits to each boys home, he found them to be extremely sincere, with a great family life.
