dogboy23, I think thats a good example you give. Sounds like this bloke at Sunbury could've been one of the Cannons stars this year. So we see a good young player not playing TAC U18 footy because he doesn't have the commitment or the right attitude. I hate wasted talent, and I guess a lot of blokes who have it go before the TAC Cup season begins.

They often speak to the parents of the boys to make sure that there is no off field distractions.
A good character is important and can often be the deciding factor if the decision comes down to one or two evenly matched players for the next selection.

Lobb is a small midfielder forward who is more than handy around the goals. Have only seen him twice but there is a few others at the club who are rated highly.

I'd take Johnson if it was a choice between him and Schulz but I have seen very little of Schulz. There are reports that he is not very physical. Walsh is string bean and has a good leap. A good footballer but I would not grab him early on.
My preference would be to go for a midfielder however, I understand why everyone wants a tall. It is just with pick six we should go for the best player regardless and perhaps look at our second pick to grab a tall

Lobb's lack of height might hurt him as it will Dinnell but both are good enough and just need an opportunity.
Watched Dinnell yesterday and he played very well but his kicking for goal hurt him.

Ok between us Jared Brennan plays for Southern Districts in the Northern Territory. He's a super player and I'd be happy if the Doggies snapped him up. We could use a good tall forward.

We have a fantastic chance to pick up one of the very best tall kids in the country. It defies all logic to pick a midfield player unless he is an absolute freak. Wells is the only midfielder you could classify as freakish and he'll be gone before our first pick.

Here's what NT coach Darren Trevena said about Brennan in the U18 Championships Record:

“He is a very tall, athletic type who is quick off the mark. He reminds me of Nigel Smart – he works very hard. He can play either forward, back or on a wing. He has very good aerial skills and can take a good mark”

Brennan is tremendously athletic. He is a mobile forward who likes to roam across the ground. Has a good burst of speed when he needs to hit a contest. He also has a great leap. Capable of doing freakish things.

I've seen O'Sullivan a few times in the past month and I've been really impressed with him. He was Northern's best player at the MCG on Saturday. And I see in today's paper that he finished a runner up in the Morrish Medal with 20 votes. He's worth a look at by someone I think if you want a small, quick, highly skilled player.

As for the draft camp list doc, apparently the AFL website will put a list up shortly. So far just the ones on the net, plus the AA U18 players:

Geelong Falcons James Allan and Tim Boyle
Gippsland Power Brendon Goddard, Jason Winderlich, Matt Ferguson and Sean Dempster
Tassie Mariners Luke Shackleton and Jason Layc'k

I rate a couple of the midfielders higher than I do the tall players.

If you take the best tall player regardless then you may not get the best overall player.
In the 1999 draft Clayton took a 184cm skinny kid with his first pick (Murphy) and overlooked a tall 195cm, mobile key position type in Travis Gaspar. I believe that was the right move for the club but there would have been pressure for him to take Gaspar however, the coaching staff allowed him to do his job and select the best player available.
In 96 it was Brown over Grgic, Steinfort and O'Farrell.
Last year most would have had us select Brooks over Power and nothing against Brooks he was a hell of a junior footballer and would have been a great addition to the club but the selection of Power was the right one.
If two players are rated equally on ability then picking the one that fills your needs better is the right way to go however, height for heights sake does not solve our problems rather it possibly creates another.
If the best player when it is our turn is tall then that will be OK however, it is too valuable of a pick to make an error.

O'Sullivan is pacy and skillful but I would be surprised if he was selected early only because of his lack of height. He is a real terrier. Perhaps the success of Rodan opens the door for the smaller players.
Williams can play the game and really has a great focus on the ball. Strongly built. A lack of real pace may hurt him.

I agree with all this and have no problem if we adopt this policy in this draft.

What I have issue with is that you claim theoretically that the top 6 players picked will be all midfielders. In one of the other threads where we had a similar discussion you implied that the top 7-8 were midfielders. I have to disagree with these assessments as I think the quality of tall talent available at the top of the draft this year is quite good. However I would say the general feeling is the top 3-4 picks would be midfielders.

I would like to see you toss up your top 10-15 picks in the order you see it.

there are quite a few clubs ahead of yours that need a quality midfielder so you will need to look elsewhere. However us charitable Bulldog folk can assist you and relieve you of your disappointment by sending you a homesick old boy for the same pick you won't get Grima with. More knowledgeable people than me have compared him with Craig Bradley. Now that must be a bargain!

I do not necessarily believe that the first six or seven players will be midfielders and I would expect that one club possibly the Saints to grab a tall player but I do rate most of the midfielders ahead of the tall players I have seen this season.

I would rate in no particular order players like Goddard, Wells, Salopek, Schammer, Gilham, Grima and perhaps even Urch ahead of Johnson, McIntosh, Walsh, Schulz or Laykock. I dont rate Gilham as a key position option at the senior level. I think there is a chance that 7 of the 10 players will not be key position types but it just depends. Last season I did not have David Hale in the first 15 and yet he went at pick 8 so obvioulsy I can get it wrong.

The Bulldogs and Clayton have a history of going for the best midfielders and I have not seen a tall player that really is a cant miss proposition. Most of the midfielders are safer bets in my opinion. So of the tall players are exciting but will need plenty of time and the Doggies do not have a great rep in that area
