He is a ruckman forward but he really does not play either position that well. Moves well for a big guy but would be a work in progress for any team that grabs him. His height is his main attribute and there is plenty of teams looking for that so he will be selected. His is a little weak with his body on body work but is fundamentally sound with his skills.
I know the Bushrangers program well and they believe he is making steady progress this season

BTW, saw both games today and some of the players have really stepped up. One more game to go then my work is nearly done.

Not sure about Hooker, but he contained Daniel Sipthorp pretty well today. If you get in the AIS/AFL and play two years of Vic Metro someone must see some potential. Generally he hasn't done a lot when I've seen him. Is it right to say his kicking is a bit ordinary?

He lacks some skills but you cant fault his workrate at all. He really does put in each week. I thought he was great last week and really held the defence together. A good defensive stopper.
Most teams need a player like him and he could hold down a back pocket or back flank at the next level.

List of Draft camp invites listed on main site. All players have generic desciption(profile). I wonder how these descriptions stand the test of time. Interested in seeing past descriptions of Bowden, Wiggins, Bartlett, Eagleton, etc.

1 sentence doesn't really tell full story. Most are painted positively. How many are very wrong?

Thanks for the notice, Chops. I just read the write ups on each player and it reads as though the draft is very strong down to player number 73. If we stick to drafting from those 73 players we can't go wrong!

Also no write up on PC28 so he may miss out again.

There has been a bit of talk on this board about the Bulldogs taking Gilham with our first pick.

Could those of you who regularly assess the young footballers give me an opinion on whether at 190 centimetres he is big enough to hold down a key spot up forward? It seems to me that he either needs to be bigger or exceptionally talented. Is the assessment that he is that talented or might he be more of a third forward or even a CHb FB?

Gilham is still growing and I would be suprised if he is not at least 192cm. He may mature into a Saddington type build which might not be big enough as a key position player. He plays as a defender and plays in the same manner that Paul Roos did.
I would think that nearly all key position players would have to be at least 192cm in the future.
Whilst he is talented he also needs a lot of work to build himself up but has a great attitude and a lot of common sense for a junior player.

Has had an interrupted season and is a mark and kick type.
He is very athletic player however, he has not done much when I have seen him

What is happening with Robbie McGhie's son Lucas? Is Richmond still likely to pick him up under he father/son rule?


The younger boy, Lachlan I think, wont be available to them under the new rule as Robbie played less than 100 games for the tiges.

Just out of interest, how do you feel about the way things panned out? Do you think you made the right decision by drafting Walsh, or would you have preferred another KPP such as Jay Schulz, Nick Smith, Jason Lay**** or even Stephen Gilham? How do you feel about Brennan being taken at number three? Do you consider him as 'the one that got away'? If Freo had defeated Adelaide in round 22 and you had pick three, would you have chosen Brennan over Walsh?

And finally a question for the Doc or any other Bulldogs fan who follows junior level football... Do you think the sole reason for Byron Schammer being overlooked for other players with the first 12 picks was solely due to his lack of height (175cm). Other than his height, he seems like the perfect footballer (just the sort of quick, skillful midfielder we needed) and we're really excited about being able to draft him at pick 13. He was, after all, considered by many to be one of the top three midfielders in the draft. If you have seen him play at junior level, what did you think of him? He played a game for Claremont last week, was best on ground and was the main instigator of Claremont's fight back into the game.

It is interesting you should ask this question. A week or so ago we debated the subject here in a thread about ‘Should we Change our Drafting Strategy’ started by Old School. It went through this issue with many of our knowledgeable posters contributing on the subject. Have a look to get a variety of views.

My view is that you can’t at this stage compare Walsh with anyone. After all, all we have had is one pre-season. Walsh is almost a year younger than some of the boys you have mentioned and still at school. I’m happy with the choice but we really won’t know for a couple of years at to how he will compare. Walsh in all probability is being groomed as a replacement for Grant and comes with an impeccable junior career.

I think it is a bit much to expect new draftees to make an immediate impact. It is very rare this happens of any sustainable quality in the first year. Judd is perhaps the only exception in recent times. You should trade for that if you require a certain type of player to fill an immediate void. Like last year we went for Bandy so help solve an immediate need to get some height and ruck support for Darcy.

As far as Brennan goes, I would have loved for him to come to our club. Had we lost to the Pies in R22 we would have got the jump on the Lions. He was certainly at the top of my wish list of preferred talls. Unfortunately, the Lions got in ahead of us and good luck to them. They have a fine young player. I’m pretty certain he would have been selected by us had he been available at pick 4. Have a look at his profile on the Lions site. It says that.

Onto Schammer. I think Freo have done very well to get a player of his calibre given their draft position. His height may have concerned a few clubs but there were also plenty of good young talls available at the top end of the draft so it is no surprise to see that they got gobbled up quickly instead. I think Schammer might have gone to Port at pick 6 had Salopek been taken earlier as many predicted. The Dockers have recruited the exact type of player they needed. I would suggest they have a player here who is capable of playing for a long time. He has terrific ball winning ability in all kinds of situations and is very good disposing the footy on either side. A real playmaker and would compliment Haselby in the middle in the near future.
