Draft vs Doozy

Do we even need a doozy?

I think people are ignoring history if they think 1 superstar = a premiership. A doozy may help us bridge the gap on other teams and that will definitely help but it could also backfire. The Urban dictionary has some funny definitions of what a "doozy" is. A lot are negative.

I'm not concerned about no Doozy. As pointed out in this thread had a couple of things gone our way we would have finished top 4. So our list is already good enough. So no doozy = no problem. I will be concerned though if we don't improve our list at the same rate as other teams. We need to do this to at least maintain where we are.

While I have faith in getting at good player for pick 12 - I also think the draft is important for sustained long term success whereas an established A grader (aka Doozy) has more immediate value for a push into the top 4 next year. But since we couldn't get a Doozy we should now be trying to upgrade our bottom 6 or recruiting for specific needs to improve our current list. Personally I would have preferred that from the start.

The focus on getting a high profile recruit seems to have distracted from this (a negative of doozies). Footy is a team game so the old cliche that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link seems right to me. We already have elite players in our team and don't need every player to be elite but we do need to get the bottom 6 closer to the top 6. I look at Hawthorn who have proven success and it's not all Doozies - but there's hardly a weak link either. It's a relatively even team of skilled players.

Will be happy with Yarran if they use him as a small forward which seems to be a unanimously agreed need. From memory Gale mentioned this in his interview on the JDM stream. "If" he comes good at Richmond that's a big tick. So that's a risk worth taking that could pay off. Don't think using him as a HB adds as much value in terms of addressing a need.

Don't really see how Townsend will get a game. Seems to add depth only. Who goes out if he comes in? We already have CEllis, Menadue and a few others waiting to come in. Add Lennon (hopefully) getting a game every week and not to mention some kpp like McBean, Elton, McKenzie trying to break in to the team. Not much room for Townsend but hope I'm wrong.

Being a long time Tiger supporter I won't go home early, even if it's freezing cold, p*ssing rain and we're 10 goals behind in the last quarter. Trade week will probably throw up a few unexpected options. Players deciding late to ask for a move, clubs putting up someone to get another deal done, talks breaking down, a smokey, etc. RFC needs to be ready to pounce on those if they happen. Seems unlikely at this stage though.

So no I don't think we need a Doozy and yes I think we can still make top 4 with our list. But now we really should be trying to upgrade our bottom 6. At this stage if we only get Yarran and Townsend I think we will lose ground against other teams and that makes it harder.

We lose ground which makes harder?

BS, losing ground makes it easier with a stronger draft. Guess what Geelongs eggs all in the Danger basket we know get better draft picks to get us a premiership! Thankyou.

We can't win in 2016. I am pumping for the likes of Geelong to beat us in 2016. We great draft picks and the likes of Goldstein in the years ahead look out for RFC.

My biggest question now is which guns need to be front loaded?

The question that keeps on keeping on is why did we take Bling when Buddy was available? ;)
Looking at things now maybe our reasoning was correct at the time, yes it all went to shite with Bling not making the grade but in the long run it is highly unlikely Buddy would have still been with us for our premiership window anyway.

I dont mind getting a doozy but you have to look at the cost, Judd turned out a bad deal for Carlton in the end, although he was a great player it wasn't the time to be selling the house for a doozy and the players they lost have now proved to be worth more over the next few years with Judd now retired, it also unbalances the pay scales so care is needed.

Most people have forgotten. doozy is worth two first rounders and big coin
Apparently this years draft is weak and we have a truck load of cash
Lennon is meh meh to maybe. So should have gone pick 12 plus Lennon for a Doozy. Still backing it to happen. We are playing the Freo with SRL game. Hopefully all behind the scenes work and no spin talk which normally lands us a DFA
Still the meltdowns have been fun. What else are we meant to be doing at this time of the year? Cannot always be on the Tan eaves dropping on Tfl78 , Helen,RichoL,StevieT and Kozi:p

A lot of dumb campaigners in this thread no offence, 1.the top end of this draft up untill the low-mid 20s will be the same as any other year 2. Where did we get deledio cotchin jack rance edwards vlastuin Ellis from
3. Whoever brought up this doozy shit ead/the_gun needs to fk up every gimp on this board but the doozy/yarran + doozy = top 4
4. We tried to get treloar and have been beaten by a better deal for gws, Dangerfield was only going to Geelong, Harley Bennell is still a cooked campaigner, the most proven way to improve a list is via the draft

getting a dozen players in in 8-10 years won't cut it .Now is the time

haha...no offence taken!!!

You can't call someone a dumb campaigner and expect no offence to be taken, my boy. It is a very offensive thing to call someone.

TigerImposter will be furious. :D

My q is simple why don't players want to come to us? We have missed on Hannebery Shiel trelOr aish red dan danger etc? Why
Seems like Yarran wants to come. Even told the hawks to piss off by the reports...
Bombers paid Goddard 900k per year a few years ago, Richmond don't take chances like that...
Hannebury openly said that he Looked at the offers to him... if we offered enough he probably would have come.

Say that to Hawthorn.

But in theory i agree. We should only be trading out our first rounder for someone who is going to be a key contributor, nothing less. The reason why everyone is talking about the doozy is because the club said we have a warchest and are going to use it. this was 3 years ago. So far everyone we have wanted have said no. except for 2nd stringers at other clubs.
The issue that a lot of supporters have, and its frustrating, is that noone besides yarran has said they want to come to the club, and our first rounder from 2 years ago seems to want out.The last time we have had a big big name come to our club was 12 years ago when we got Nathan Brown in his peak. Then you see very very good GWS players nominating Collingwood and Melbourne over us for the last few years and the supporters are in their very right allowsed to ask "why?" what do these clubs offer or have better than us?
We have offered our our first rounder last year for a player on 1 leg, and if not for our medical staff, would be looking very very stupid this year.
yes we have gotten some very good picks with our first rounders that are going to take us forward, but who knows, we could have ended up with another JON or Polo or Meyer at those picks.

Im all for building our club through the draft however, sometimes, you need to look at the club and say "we need a player in this position now because they can take us further" at the moment, we have a need of an experienced inside mid. At the moment, all the teams around us (and just below us) are bolstering their lists for the next few years. Pies, Geelong, Dogs, are all getting quality players in to improve their teams. then add in the bottom clubs now getting access to the very top of the draft, and the continued improvement of GWS and GC (well depending on how many clubs pillage them) and if we come out of this trade/FA period with just Yarran, its not good enough.
This year is a weak draft, and we have drafted very well in the last 2-3 years. This year and next year are the years that we should be sacraficing a few draft picks to bring in quality players. players that will be an upgrade on Grigg, Newman, Maric, Chaplin, Batchelor, Hunt - there are still a lot of areas that we can improve.
while other clubs are willing to recruit, and really make themselves a club that people want to go to, (from the outside) we are like the ugly rich girl in class, that no respectable person will go near, unless they flash a load of cash in their face.

I want to start a campaign against the use of the word campaigner it's such a campaigner of a word and whoever started using it on bf needs campaigning up the campaigner

To test the theory.of doozy v draft....which club in the recent past has not traded for players to heighten their chance for premiership glory?
Hawks - have been trade week champions
Cats....blitzed so far in 2015
Free & WC are gunning for quality despite finishing 1&2 this year

Drafting builds the core...trading is the cherry on top

Who says we aren't trading to improve? Yarran and our other targets still improve our overall list. Hawthorn have only really ever traded in one doozy in Burgoyne and Frawley came after losing one of the greatest forwards of all time. The rest like Gibson, Hale etc. were astute pick ups.

Who were the big name pick ups at the recent premiership clubs?

Hawthorn: Burgoyne, Lake, Frawley. Ok

Sydney: ?????? Kennedy and Mumford weren't big name pick ups at the time.

Collingwood: Luke ball for pick 30? Any others? Swan, Pendles, Sidebottom, Beams, Cloke, Maxwell, Reid, Brown, Thomas, Harry O, Dawes, Davis, Didak, Shaw, Goldsack were all home grown

Geelong: Ottens in 2004. Who else? Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Chappy, Selwood, Scarlett, Enright, Egan, Taylor, Lonergan, Ling, Johnson, Stokes, Varcoe, Hawkins, Mackie, Hunt, Milburn were all home grown. Harley and Mooney effectively were too.

West Coast: Daniel Chick? Tyson Stenglein? Are they big names? Cousins, Judd, Kerr, Embley, Fletcher, Glass, Lynch, Wirripanda, Banfield, Cox, Hunter, Braun, Waters were all products of West Coast

I guess they both have there benefits; continously drafting quality kids will see us continue to steadily build and reach the finals consistently. Which is great, we all want to be up there for a while. But in terms of next year, we won't be finishing much higher than 5th.

If we went down the doozy path however and landed say a Dangerfield (Obviously he always wants to go to Geelong but it's just a hypothetical) along with Yarran it would instantly launch us into the contenders category for 2016. Memberships would go through the roof and the buzz around Richmond would be crazy until the season starts. Short-term, we get a serious crack at the flag.

My heart continues to say we should of landed a big name player, our list is close but with the addition of another gun we'd just about be there and I would kill to see us actually have a real chance at a flag next year, our core is peaking.

I absolutely agree. I believe that RFC are probably a bit overly conservative at the moment re: list management. I don't want to continually just make finals. I want a shot at a flag with the core group we have now. Time is ticking RFC. Our premiership window is ajar. Let's slam it wide open and jump through!
