Interesting article, I like how Richmond finish 'Middle of the table'

You guys are getting the short end of the stick during your 'rebuilding phase' with GC17 taking your picks, this could become the base for your 'could have' argument in a few years. Very unfortunate timing.

During the period studied (2004 to 2007) Eagles ranked 2nd, which is pretty good considering we won a flag in that period.

Looking forward to the clashes between both of our young sides in the next couple of years :thumbsu: Will be some great new duals

I think we have snuck in just before the GC pillage with some very good picks over the last 3 years. Need one of our lower picked KPP's to outperform or a future trade but I think we are well placed.
Some others will hurt more such as Sydney.

I agree I think that the club reloaded at just the right time. They did insanely well in the last few drafts.

I think it's teams like Brisbane & Sydney that will struggle in the next few years.

Richmond look to be rebuilding at the worst possible time too. They cut deep last year in an apparently weak draft (compared to us doing it at the perfect time in the 08 super draft) and now they've got all the compromised drafts to look forward too.

Those poor buggers can't take a trick.

I kind of agree.........but I think its to early to tell.
I think coming last this year will be a blessing in disguise - Pick 4 - and who knows, maybe we can trade it + one to get Darling??

We are still light on for KPP's - hoping some rookies/late picks come on aint gonna make it happen. We need quality.

Now I wished we tanked - and not because of some wacky numbers made up from a banker with pretty graphs and a shiny suit. We missed out on quality picks, bloody hell, every one else has done it.....except us, its gonna bite and bite hard.

So, if we'd tanked, I am assuming that would mean neither of Palmer or Mora? Would we have gone for Hill higher than we did; possibly not. And also Suban and Mayne, who I am mentioning because of your moniker; would we have them? I just can't see the outcome being significantly better.

Plus from your post I am assuming you would target KPF's, so I'd also assume you'd put a line through one of Palmer, Hill or Mora (who may be a KPF, but at this stage isn't) to snare one.

Sorry if that ruffles some of your feathers. You can argue that we are in a good position going forward, and I agree to a certain extent, but I think we could have quite easily been in a better position than now.

I am pretty certain we would not have qualified for a priority pick. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If the club would have recruited Palmer anyway, it would make little difference if we had tanked. Same with Mora. Same with Mayne. Tanking gives you higher picks, which means you would have preferred different players with those higher picks.

Please, post the selections you would have preferred with slightly better picks and compare them. I'd be surprised if the majority of our early few selections were not identical in Palmer, Mayne, Hill, Suban, Clarke, Morabitto, Fyfe. You may quibble about the details, but can't see significant differences, but I am open to persuasion.

And for mine, I would have gone for a tall over Ballantyne at the selection we went for him. But we didn't.

Also, I am assuming you are not a Harvey fan? Because your philosophy goes totally against what he seems to stand for, and would have his position in an even more tenuous situation than it is.
 
Tanking during that period would not only lose us some senior players, but many young players would have walked headed into the GC17 and WS drafts.

I'm stoked with the way the club has gone about its recruiting and development and wouldn't have it any other way.

Gav, I am not quibbling - as you say about details, nor am i going to begin to quibble because you want me to.

I think that we are in an ok situation at the moment before the drafts get r*ped, not a really good situation as we could have been, if certain results went our way -or the way i would have prefered -we could have been sitting pretty.

Which Tall should we have picked instead of Ballas?

I am a big Harvey fan, I reckon he's the man to lead us for the next 5 or so years - he deserves that amount of time, but gee a couple more first round draft picks would have been nice.

You think Harvey would have stayed if the club wanted him to tank? It isn't in his character, he's a fighter. Do you think the club would have kept him if he wanted to tank? Absolutely no way!
 
I believe that tanking is the list management equivalent of popping acid - the short term high is outweighed by the inevitable longer term impairment.

How so? The over-riding objective should be to build a winning mentality across the entire club, not just the playing group, but everyone from the CEO right down to the boot-studder. This should never be compromised, for if it is then the integrity of management and coaching decisions become suspect like fruit from a poisoned tree.

I aint taking the piss and I would not have any idea about what the club would have done, or harvey for that matter, But, I reckon a couple more 1st round picks would be pretty sweet right now.

Next few years I assume you are meaning 2-3 years. How will Brisbane struggle? Forward line has 2 coleman medalists, Power and Black still have plenty to give in the midfield and our back line is probably our strongest area.
 
All 4 pushing 30, pretty easy to see how you will struggle in a couple of years. In fact I think you will struggle this year - I don't see where all the hype comes from for Brisbane this year.
Sure you got Fev (and Staker and Buchanan is it) but Brown and Fev both can't play within the 50m arc and will get caned with run out of defence. Clark and Lewie and Rich look good but no-one else springs to mind.
I think Voss has f'ed it! By losing Bradshaw you gave up draft picks for what, an extra goal a game that Fev may give you over Bradshaw. Mad!!

PS i just check out the bris forum and player rankings indicate a very thin list. Players ranked 14 plus are very shaky... you wouldn't want many injuries.

I actually like both the Lions and Swans, so I'm not saying that because I dislike either side. This probably isn't the place for it on a Dockers forum, but Voss really did take a huge gamble and is possibly facing a lot of long term damage due to the trade period and draft just passed. They picked up Raines, Staker, Buchanan, Fevola, Xav Clarke & Maguire.

As a fan of a team that has been dumb enough to try and load up that same way, I think it's going to suck for the next coach who inherits that problem. While most other clubs were loading up on young talent while they still could, Voss took the other route and traded making things very difficult for himself in the long term. Short term gain, long term pain.

harves! has put his beliefs into developing what freo drafts with or without concessionary picks.tanking.would've snared freo a few extra bonus high draft picks.we got a coupla bonus picks in greg and matt.ya! harves & his staff no doubt. believe they can develop who ever they draft into a super team orientated player. freo have never been in the position ,they are at right now in regards to so many youngsters on our list.i have had a few bonus beers. im excited:D
 
Exactly, I think Broughton might go a few places higher than what we got him if they had that draft again. In the re-do the (whatever year it was) Draft on the D&T board many have Duff as inside the top 20 from his year. Mayne would certainly go higher.We are drafting quality with our later picks and that is better than having a few picks and not getting it right. Having said that The Weags did bloody well out of Schuey & Swift.
