I was talking to this bloke the other day who had made a squillion in the tech boom working in California (late nineties). Anyway, he bought himself a privateer racing team who race in events line LeMans 24 hrs. The conversation we had was about car drivers and overall competence. After a few laps of various race courses with bona fide race drivers he was of the opinion that most of us day2day drivers are really crap drivers who would not have a clue about our cars handling abilities and our own overall driving abilties. I'm thinking he might be right now, after over 10 years on the road I feel I have sunk into a rut where I drive on "autopilot" and I don't really know my cars characteristcis when pushed to the edge of the envelope.

Do you other readers rate yourself as good drivers? What have you done to improve your driving skills?

I reckon im a pretty good driver - however, like you mentioned, when going to work every morning, it becomes a routine rather than something you pay attention to.

Havent done anything to improve my driving, dont really have any intention to....

But ive only been driving for 4 years now ;)

I trust my driving skills over anyone's. Because of night shift work, I've done most of my driving at night and actually prefer driving at night. On the otehr hand, when I've done day shift work, a lot of it has meant driving through the city, so traffic doesn't faze me either. Because of my experience in driving aroun dthe suburbs, I never get lost - I can find my way home from absolutely anywhere in greater Melbourne.

I think the secret to being a good driver is to be conservative. I'd rather be safe and underestimate my car's capabilities, than overestimate and f*ck myself up.

I've had my licence for about 27 years now, have done some stupid things, eg picked up speeding, racing along Anzac Hwy with a mate at 120km/p/hr.

Anyway I have mellowed, lol, the past 15 years or so I have averaged about 80,000 kms per annum, so yeah, I have some experience

Worst prang was in the sticks, and I mean REAL sticks, in the middle of Ngarkat National Park, which is huge, located between Bordertown and Pinnaroo. Hit a Roo which came from behind some scrub, I was doing 170kms/p/hr, yep, 170, hit the roo, the car started spinning, taking out bushes and roadside posts, managed to control it enough to come to a stop and walk away from the prang. The car, a 2 month old Magna was a write off. I figure that if that one didn't kill me, then no car accident will get me.

The Roo was stone motherless dead, so I kicked the bastard, lol

my driving skills arent to bad,ive been driving for 6 years now and dont ever over-estimate myself,or other drivers
have had a crash yet or even looked like having one (touch wood)
drive mostly in the country and a lot of times are at night and there are plently roos about
dont mind driving down in the city either,in fact i do enjoy driving in the city for an extra bit of a challenge........well,for a country driver at least:p ;) :o

Maybe you could offer your services for the Kangaroo cull campaign, you won't need a rifle however just your car. ;) :p :D
