we need to educate young people not to take up drug use. it is definitely an image thing. heroin in this country is still perceived as being a cool drug. we also have a strong injecting culture here. different situation in, say, holland, where heroin has the image of a older person's drug, a druggie's drug, and not cool at all. they also smoke the heroin, not inject it. injection is pretty bad IMHO. you can do massive damage to your veins. you can inject in places where you can do severe damage to yourself, like in the groin (I have seen pictures of this).

solvents is also a big thing among young people these days, although admittedly the problem is not as big in victoria as it is in, say, WA. it is seen as a cool thing to do. this is the image that we need to dispel.

I just keep away from anyone who does it, i'll leave it to the experts.

Some people have addictive personalities, others dont. You can be "addicted" to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, food, even people and behaviours! EVERYONE knows that drugs are addictive, so you go into it knowing that you could get addicted. If you have a strong enough personality, you're lucky and you dont. But if you dont have a strong personality, you get addicted. Gee - now whose fault is that i wonder? We all know our own minds and what we're capable of. Weak people take drugs, weak people get addicted, and cant get off them. Simple - if you're weak willed and worry you'll get addicted - DONT TOUCH!!!

I started smoking dope close to thirty years ---- when it wasnt hydro top grade smoke but the whole plant was used not just the heads ---it wasnt a huge business but more of a social laid back thing to do.

I havent smoked for years now as ive seen to many peoples lives wrecked from smoking dope ---believe it or not.

Well maybe wrecked is the wrong word ---but kids who were talented at sport or academically inclined waste their talents to just sit around smoking dope all day.

Ive tried a few others like LSD and cocaine and speed and if i was going to get hooked on something it would be speed ---- probably shouldnt admit it but i had some great nights out on speed.

I think people would be suprised at the amount of people in mental hospitals suffering marijuana paranoia

Yes, but there is still that initial option to begin with. I read this book called Candy, about this couple who did heroin and it showed how their lives started, and how they ended. It should be as simple as yes or no for some people... everyone knows that initial response is a life changer for some. Drug addicts dont deserve sympathy - they knew the first time they said yes that it could affect their lives dramatically and badly!!

Nah, no deaths that i have heard of.... just minimal brain cells and um, extreme paranioa, and, weird eating habits, and bad skin..... But jeez, nice and relaxing is a joint now and then!!

I personally and unfortunately have a very severe drinking problem that I have had for over 10 years & is dramatically shortening my life.

Your probably right ---but believe me a lot of people have scrambled brains from being chronic dope smokers, ive seen it happen to a lot of people including friends and family.

People who smoke tend to hang around with people who smoke and their aim in life tends to be dividing up their next ounce or whatever.

If you smoke a lot eventually youll see noone can tell you.

well, everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess. drugs is one issue that tends to polarise opinions. however, the non-sympathy view is not one that is advocated by the government. otherwise we would be reverting to a strict zero tolerance ethos.

I think most people think addicts are scum of the earth until it happens to someone close to them. not that it's happened, but if my mother got addicted to drugs, I wouldn't stand around saying, "mum, you had a choice and therefore I now have no sympathy for you". rather I would be doing everything in my power to help her get better.

that is what happened to melbourne's lord major John So, whose son got involved in drugs. because it was his son, it totally changed his perspective on drugs.

I smoke dope everyday... and have for about the last 5 years...
I have held down a fulltime job for the no. 1 stockbroker in Australia for the last 3 years, I pay my rent on time, i eat proper food and i haven't had a zit since i was in high school...
How can i function soooo properly? Dope's really bad for you... not?!!?

Oh ! really, you are either to young to understand, ignorant or don't have some sort of substance problem. What if one of your family members had a substance problem ?.

My Psyc can Gaff on as much as he wants but he doesn't come home with me at the end of the day.
The first Psyc I went to, I was going to ask him if he would like to swap chairs.

I just don't classify marijuana as a drug... and i have a big problem with people catagorzing it with drugs like smack... its bull****, dope's sweet, it chills you out, you're more likely to kill yourself when your ****ed...

Substance abuse doesn't come from the first hit... you ain't gonna be addicted like that! Its the 4th or 5th time you do it that week, then you should be questioning your actions... If you give in, well you just have a weak moral... that's your fault not the drug!

I have a drinking problem too, so i cant comment. I am addicted to Cosmopolitans.
