Anyone here got a Digital SLR? If so, which one?
I know Zeke does :p

I'm looking for some advice on the canon EF 50mm f/1.8 prime lens.

I've got a 350D Jim. Brand new one. Does a hell of a lot more than happy snaps, considering it takes comparable photos to the 20D with the same lens.

DSLRs are great fun! :) I have a Nikon D70s and an assortment of poor man's lenses (Nikkor 18-70, 70-300G, 50/1.8 and Tokina 12-24). Still learning every day, but it makes photography a lot more interesting than using a P&S.

I haven't used the Canon 50/1.8, but I daresay it is very similar to the Nikkor 50/1.8 that I have. Great value lens (i believe the Canon version is even cheaper than the Nikkor, which itself is brilliant value) for the money. Perfect for portraits and low-light. Nice and light and small, makes the camera feel like a biggish P&S :) Takes pics that are razor-sharp.

For the price, it's a "why the hell not" lens.

I've got the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MkII - or 'Nifty Fifty' as it is often referred to.

Cheapest Canon lens on the market. I picked mine up for under $150.

It's a bit hit and miss on auto focus, and a little soft wide open, but it's a pretty fun little piece of glass for the money. I wouldn't rely on one in a commercial shoot, cause you can never be confident that you've got the thing in focus on the fly.

The EF 50mm f1.4 is infinitely better, but is about $600.

I took this with the 50mm f1.8:

It's got beautiful creamy bokeh, and you can achieve a tack sharp image, but as I keep saying - it's a little hit and miss.

I only got my nifty fifty about a month ago, but so far am very pleased with the results. Given its a prime it makes you really think about the frame and will have you moving back/forward to capture the right image but I've hardly taken it off since it arrived :thumbsu:

I got mine for $104 from Camera Paradise using a $20 coupon I found online. Great company, rang to confirm address/order on the same day of making the purchase, and was delivered within 3 working days from HK.

Edit: Just realised when this opening post was..............
