Maybe I was reading too much into things ...... but anyone else detect a note of bitterness in Dwayne's comments yesterday.

Couldn't help but chuck in the odd throwaway line about last year's finals, that Adelaide should have lots of supporters because they got the jump on Port by entering the AFL first, that sort of stuff.

You can take the boy out of Port Adelaide, but you can't take the Port Adelaide out of the boy .....

Yep & yep.

But i still believe he's one of the best callers of AFL going around & at least we know that "they" are really "hurting" :)

Yeah, I don't have a problem with his calls and agree he's one of the best going around. It was more an observation of his Port Adelaide heritage shining through. I actually found it vaguely amusing.

He's still confused about whether he is Victorian or from Port Adelaide. Could be from all those blows to the head. ;)

Normally he gives us a fairer go than anyone, normally.
I like his calling.

Was surprised at what he said though about us having 8 SANFL clubs support and having the jump on Port.

Well we keep hearing how Port have tradition and history and are a real club and we are just a franchise.

Well who really had the jump on the other??????? Cant work both ways as he put it.

True being a one team town taking on the Vics got us support here, but its been ten years since that changed and are support is still going from strenth to strenth, initiatives of our club to involve our supporters are copied by others including the history filled Port.

I will though acknowlage that early in yesterdays game umpire poll sorry number 30 was killing us in Sydney's forwardline and Dwayne acknowlaged that.

At half time he agreed Adelaide was on top but said Sydney was only playing at 70% capacity and had more upside than the Crows for the 2nd half. Sounded like he was hopeful of an Adelaide loss by his tone.

When the PAPs first came in, all I heard about from every Port supporter I knew was about their history, how they had 500,000 fans, would be the most supported team in the country, would dominate the comp within three years, would win a flag before us, would fill Footy Park every week, would be the number 1 club in SA et bloody cetera.

Then reality set in.

NEWSFLASH FOR D RUSSELL

If Port went in first they still wouldnt have anywhere near the amount of supporters that the AFC does. I am so over the singlemindedness of Port Adelaide people. The chances are that if Port entered the AFL in 1991 that they may have been broke by now. The SANFL would have done everything in its power (no pun) to ensure that it would have become a huge financial failure for the PAFC.

Port are better off for going into the AFL in 1997. The have the full support of the SANFL, use of football park and the afl infastructure was already in place for Port to use and the SA public had already become accustomed to AFL football.

Derrwayne Russell.

Tool of the highest order. But Crows fans, take a number and get in line.

He's the biggest North Melb hating member of the media, and you can have your turn with him, when we've finished with him.

And best description from his VFL days..."Looks like Tarzan, but plays like Jane".

Don't know who invented that line, but it perfectly sums him up.:thumbsu:

Sorry, who said they wanted him or their turn with him ?

Good post Roger Rabbit69.
Im sitting here about to log on thinking Ill post how much I cant stand Jane Russell and you beat me to it;)

Let me just clarify he can call the game well when he stops dribblin shi t and trying to crack jokes with Brereton but it all takes a back seat to his ill taken humour.

And it wasnt just yesterdays game either.
I have no respect for Russell he is a goose of the highest order.

His commentary is about as good as his AFL playing days, sub-standard and mediocre.

We better get used to that cause i would say that a comment about last years finals will be in every rooch article from here on in quite rightly so to but my gripe is leading up to the finals in 03 rooch did not mention the finals flops of port in 02

I'm listening to Dwayne Russell on the radio right now. I think he makes a very good point about Adelaide, I've been saying it all season. He feels the Adelaide list is no better than some other clubs, but somehow Neil Craig has managed to extract a greater committment from his players than other coaches are able to do. Some of the "lesser" Crows players would also be ordinary players at other clubs but they are maximising their potential under Craig at the moment.

Spot on the money, and as Punchy Bassett says above he's on 5AA proving your point right this minute.

Not quite bagging us, but not convinced we deserve the lofty status given to us. I thought that performances spoke louder than words but not with Dwayne baby!!

It's funny how we read things. I think he was actually praising the Crows for superior performances based on better commitment. I didn't see it as having a go at them.

Even if that is true its not what matters. Results are all that matters and they are beyond reproach.

I know Dwayne personally - since he was about 10 to be precise. He always was a Port fanatic with a touch of feral in him. Not too many kind words regarding the Crows have ever intentionally passed his lips.

It would kill him to say nice things about the Crows!! :p

I didnt see a lot of the game yesterday but when I tuned in was wondering wtf I watching. Tv on, get comfortable on the lounge, I clearly have the right channel as I see the footy on, but all I hear in the background is Dwayne Russell going on about the origins of Porplyzia, and the spelling of his name.:p

FFS I tuned in for the footy not a history lesson.:) To be fair he is generally a good commentator, just some of his banter is a bit hit and miss.

I think he was going on about Porplyzia because he declared the previous week that Jason wasn't related to Andy (which he is, even though their surnames are spelt differently).

I thought Dwayne Russell was being an absolute prat on 5AA. He stated that Adelaide are vunerable but when KG asked him what their weaknesses were all he could come up with is that their list is no better than anyone else.

What a friggin genius this guy is! Like we didn't know that already! And what factors decide how good a list is anyway? The number of first round draft picks? Their standing in the Victorian media?

And so what if their list isn't that great, how does this help opposition coaches to try and beat us? He mentions guys like Massie, Skippy, Torney as not being the strongest players. Surely you can name half a dozen players from any team as being only average palyers. At least our average blokes are playing their hearts out.

I got the feeling that DR really wanted to bag the Crows tonight but just couldn't find anything reasonable to come up with. And I don't remember him saying the Crows have done well in spite of having an average list, not sure where you guys picked that up from.

He then finishes about the Crows saying that we (the fans) shouldn't think that our team is invincible. Derrrr! What does he think we are, Collingwood supporters?

Then, just to show his complete inability to remain unbiased when speaking about SA teams, he then says he thinks Port can finish with 12 wins and make the top 8!

I've always thought Dwayne Russell is ok. My impression is that he's always been quite fair in his comments and often complimentary of the Crows.
