I think here Dwayne is referencing the ancient Roman practice of ‘drowning your enemies in honey’. Customarily, after a victory, Roman soldiers would take the body of their highest ranked foe and submerge the corpse in a large transparent honey filled case that they would leave on display in captured towns. This served to preserve the mortally wounded opposition as a reminder to the vanquished of Roman military might. It also acted as a symbol to show that even in the the sweetest of substances, you can still find death - a reminder from Rome that even when times are good, one must always remember that death forever lurks nearby.

Interesting, the most famous historical example of calling sport remotely - the radio covering the 1938 test series from England in a studio, did just that. They were called the "Synthetic" tests. They received telegrams, added crowd noise, McGilvray hitting the desk with a pencil for the sound of bat on ball. But they admitted loud and clear what they were doing (McGilvray covered it in great and entertaining detail in his first book). So people didn't mind.

If Russell and the rest of the Fox clowns were a bit more honest I think most would be a lot more easygoing about it.
