Read an interview recently with DG regarding his problems with injuries over the last four seasons. He mentioned that the fitness staff have taken some kgs off to lighten the load on his hamstrings. Do people think that DG can play that HBF role in the mould of Malceski or McVeigh at the Swans. Does he have the pace and decision making. I would be interested in what people thought. Think of this in the context of a fit Astbury probably pushing him out of best 22.

No.

IMO Chaplin, Grimes and Batchelor are fighting for two spots once Astbury returns.

The coaches love Chaplin so you can take him out of the equation... Leaving Grimes v Batchelor.

Not really sure where he's at.
His body has really let him down obviously.
He's a competitive bugger which I like.
Get through the season, have an injury free pre season and launch from there fingers crossed.

Was scarily dependable in his first 20 odd games. Has either been pretty poor or pretty good this season. Not sure what to make of his year. I think it's best to judge after a full year next year, hopefully with an uninterrupted pre-season under his belt.

I'm a huge fan of Dyl, and always feel better when he's in our back line. He has had an up and down year, which hasn't surprised me given his lack of continuity over the last few years. IMO, he's the prototype 3rd tall. He is deceptively quick over the first few metres, can play tall or small, and his disposal is above average.

Touch wood, he plays out the rest of the year and smashes the preseason, and I honestly believe he will be back to his best.

Although I know this won't happen, I'd love for dimma to play Rance, Astbury, Grimes, Morris together.. with a varying combination of Houli, Batchor, Deledio on the flanks.. If Astbury's body holds up, I believe Chaplain "should" become redundant..

Agree with every word bar one: Morris.

Grimesy is returning to the top of his form over last month, handling the ball cleaner, some dash in his game and effective spoiling ....I expect newy to retire which opens a spot up

Hopefully this season is an exception to the rule.

Not big enough to play KP, not skilled enough to be a rebounding defender.

His future lies on the 3rd tall role, however it's concerning that the coach is more comfortable playing Batchelor on tall ahead of Grimes

Has been awful this season, defensive work has been so-so. His ball use and decision making abhorrent.

Reckon when Astbury returns that he should go, but the coaches seem to love him. I'd hate to see Batchelor go before him.

I like him but this hasn't been a good year for him.
He's shown enough in the past to earn a spot on the list. With a good preseason he may fulfill his potential.
Would it be such a bad thing to have some depth next year and guys fighting for spots. It's a long season.

Not a good year football wise by Grimes,But understandable,Needs to getover the mental side of things and him actually stringing games togeather like this will boast his confidence in his hammys(As long as he sticks to the program).

For team balance, I don't think you can play Rance, Astbury, Chaplin and Grimes in the one defence. It's just a bit too top heavy and could be cut up by smaller, quicker forwards. Grimes might see himself a depth player next year, which isn't a bad thing. I wouldn't mind seeing a trio of Rance, Astbury and Grimes though. Chaplin has been underwhelming this season, but at his age, the money he's on and without the previous injury troubles of Grimes, he doesn't get the same leniency from me.

Id rather Batchelour over Grimes.
Batch's kicking is much better. A lot harder at the ball as well.

Agree with the balance issue. It is an indictment on Grimes that Batch had to play on Tomlinson so I would think he is depth at the moment which is fine. Chappy while he has ahd some poor games, has also played to a higher lever than Grimes so he stays in.

The trouble with Grimes is that he offers very little offensively - he's purely negative. He's fine for a pure shut-down role, but that is not a role that exists much in today's football. At the moment, we don't have too many defenders who can be relied upon to offer run out of the backline - Houli is about it, now that Newman's reaching the end - so we have to persist with Deledio or Martin across half-back. Hopefully Batchelor can take on that role a bit more.

I like him but he'll need to work hard for his spot in the side. Obviously he's competing with Batch for a spot, and if Darrou ever gets his shot, the competition will only be fiercer, because I rate Darrou above both of those players (based on their respective VFL form - though as we all know, VFL form doesn't always translate to AFL form).

I can't see him ever playing up the ground. He is a back pocket to the core. When he gets the ball, his first instinct is to stop and stand still while he looks around. I have never seen Malceski or McVeigh do that.

I do love his defensive work, though, and he has some athletic traits.
