Recommitted Dylan Stephens [re-signed for two years]

There's been noise in Adelaide about the lad since before we didn't draft him (traded down to Fish), and the kid is racking it up in the VFL but can't get a game for the Swans.
Would be worth Adelaide's second, say pick 21-25 after everything?

Bit of a reach in hindsight. Low production, and only a couple of really good traits. He’s certainly quick, but his pace isn’t a major point of difference at AFL level. Virtually zero inside game too.

I know Carlton were keen on him, but there were a huge cluster of players in his draft range recruiters found hard to split. The order came down to personal preference.

Reckon he’s a wingman rather than the inside/outside type the Swans have intended. With his traits he’s never going to thrive in Sydney where the grounds and play style won’t suit.

Should come in for a late second rounder you would think. We were into him during his draft year.
Obviously just hasn't fit in at the Swans, and with them getting two great local kids in their academy last year, not sure they would really care about him leaving.

All jokes aside, I just think he’s a simple slow burn. Has a lot to work with but hasn’t quite learned AFL intensity yet. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him really flourish in due course, he is at least dominating NEAFL.

You wouldn't think so but we had the same feelings with Fischer McAsey that if he left, due to not having bedded a spot down in the side, he might be lucky to get the crows a pick in the 20's. If Stephens wants out it will then come down to what the swans can get..but I'm not saying he wants out

Highly doubt swans would trade a highly rated pick 5 player for a pick in the 20s after 2 years of development.

I doubt Sydney have any interest trading him for anything short of a top 10 pick. Unless he demands a salary that they really aren't keen on. He's a little behind the pace in physicality and development but I doubt they are too worried at the moment. That said:

Essendon got Caldwell for 29 and a future 2nd for 44 and 77.

That's not far off pick 20 in value.

Caldwell was pick 11 in a super draft and was probably rated on par or even above Stephens when drafted.

If a club has the leverage and is willing to play hardball it probably ends with the Swans being on the wrong side of the deal.

My guess is unless the money and opportunity are too good to pass up Stephens will stick it out. The Swans are building a really good young midfield core with Mills, Heeney, Warner, Rowbottom, McInerney and Florent. I can understand that he's behind those guys but I reckon he eventually fit in nicely with that group.

Doubt he’s keen on leaving.

He’s a second year player who’d be silly to sign before he’s got some form behind him - may as well wait for a better offer and worst case he case he heads home to take up a decent contract.

You mostly read the rough age, team and general area of the ground they play. "young Fremantle forward Michael Fredericks", "veteran Eagles defender Shannon Hurn" etc So, in this instance it would be "young Sydney midfielder Dylan Stephens"
