Qatar's bid.

USA's bid: It will grow the profile of the sport.

Korea's bid: It will help unification.

Japan's bid: 3D Holograms in stadia worldwide. WTF?

Australia's bid: You no doubt remember Paul Hogan? N...no?

Spain/Portugal's bid: We can host a World Cup when both our economies are bankrupt.

Russia's bid: Government support. Vlad won't get on board until he's allowed to pull on a jersey.

Holland/Belgium's bid: Belgium matters.

England's bid: Media support.

For Australia I would say the most outlandish claim is: "It will transform the nation"

Did it do that for France? USA? Japan? Korea? Germany?

(I'll leave South Africa out because I think its too early to quantify exactly what effect it has had/ will have on South Africa)

When I think of any of those 5 countries I don't think of the World Cup or Soccer really.

France I think of Paris - who doesn't? Nothing to do with the World Cup.

Germany I think of hard working people who make good cars. And Oktoberfest.

USA - Well, Soccer barely rates a mention.

Japan - I think of an old old country heading towards bankruptcy. But, who have plenty of money at the moment to throw around.

Korea - I think of North & South. Its divided, and no World Cup is going to bridge that gap - it will be China turning off the spigots to Pyongyang.

Nothing will help N Korea / S Korea.

USA - World Cup 94 helped establish the MLS which today is a thriving national league.

And Germany was just an all time great party. especially for us Aussies.


You are right, there isn't a World Cup that will "transform" our nation so to speak. It will have a large effect on it but certainly nowhere near the levels of "transforming" it.

Most of those news reports are bullshit, focusing on one or two incidents and then trying to exploit them as wider problems. Most of the bad press in France for race related issues stems from Le Pen who is a racist bigot.

I have family in France mate - it is better there now then it has ever been. And the great French football team of 98-2000 was largely responsible for uniting the country (and ensuring that bigots like Le Pen never got into government).

I would agree with Brazil - and probably give a pat on the back to England. It is where the game originated, so it has a special place over there.

I too might be going to Brazil in 2014. Should be fun if we ever organise this trip like we keep telling ourselves we will. Half the folks going are now living in USA/UK/Europe.

I will give you that American point. It did definitely help do that. But that is certainly not transforming the USA. (Not that the USA ever claimed it would of course). But that is transforming the sport of Soccer in the USA.

Nothing wrong with that - and I've no doubt it would have the same effect here. But the Aussie bid leaders don't spruik this (although they no doubt think it) because they don't want to put the AFL/NRL/ARU offside (nor the Fed Govt. - who don't want to be seen to be pouring money into 1 sport over and above others that currently have larger fanbases.)

Of course, at the end of the day, its all politics - and most of us understand the difference between what people say, what they think, and what they actually end up doing - which is usually somewhere in the middle of the first two.
