I was looking through the yearbook and noticed how good our defense was after the mid year break if you look at scores against


Geelong 7.7
Hawks 12.10
Essendon 10.13
Port 16.6
Dogs 8.9
Brisbane 10.13
Carlton 6.13
Freo 6.9
Melbourne 10.7
Sydney 11.9

I know we won a lot of these games and 6 were at home but it is still fairly impressive

Is this a reason for further optimism about our chances of doing well this year

Is this a reason for further optimism about our chances of doing well this year

People don't remember that the likes of Glass and Hunter had serious injuries pre-season and never really came good until the middle of the year. They also forget how Wirrpunda was out of form and that the other players in Waters, Butler, Nicoski and Jones all have very little experience. This year we should be a heap better as long as we suffer very few injuries.

The defense improved from weak to solid in the second half of the season. Mostly due to the returns of Darren Glass, Daniel Chick and Drew Banfield and the return to form of David Wirrpunda.

To be anything more than an also-ran, the Eagles would to improve from solid to good at least.

Hopefully with guys like Nicoski and Waters coming through, they can do this but there is still a fair bit lacking down back.

Yeah, a lot of people under-estimate our defensive 6, but they're getting better with every match they play and they'll get more and more credit when we show it to Victorian teams away from home.

I hope the other teams under estimate our defence....

Quite correct about last year after the return/return to form of Glass, Chick, Banners and Wirra. Hunter and Lynch were also impressive last year.
