If it is good enough for the Olympic Games committee to take back the gold medals won by drug cheats should the AFL take back the premiership unfairly won by the Eagles now that the club have admitted that they knew Benny and others were on drugs half way through the year?

That's the standard for individuals and teams that have found to be affected by drugs, I can see no reason why the AFL should leave the records stand. As an aside, the Sydney players can actually thank the kids that give them their premiership medallions.

This is OT but it's fun having a fascination with the eagles. All over the world football passion is enhanced by rivalries, local or otherwise. I'll admit that I take more interest in their games than the other 14 clubs. I'm like an anti-supporter.

Every footy fan should have a rival anti-team, it's half the fun of football. It gives you somewhere to aim your negative energy and you get to barrack for a second team every weekend. The old 'I support two teams - Freo and whoever plays west coast'.

Plus you get to support that second team in a different style. I never bag out Freo boys when they make a mistake in a game but when I watch Richo (for example) miss a set shot against the eagles I'm free to jump up and down screaming "Richo you useless ****ing ****, my grandma could've kicked that."

It's a good release and all in good fun.

Medals are taken off olympic athletes because the drugs they use enhance performance.
I think it depends if these drugs are performance enhancing, or just recreational drugs.
If the drugs are performance enhancing, then you may have a valid point.

Lets not forget that these drugs are actually forbidden by law.
Regardless of their impact on individual performances, they are NOT accepted by the the law or general society so swift retribution should follow suit.

Anyone merely shrugging this off as "a couple of young guys with to much money" are kidding themselves.

I for one am glad that an example has been made here and it revolves around one of the AFL's biggest names.

Parisotto, who wrote the book Blood Sport and led the research team that developed advanced drug testing for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, said performance and training could be enhanced by illicit drugs similar to cocaine and amphetamines.

I cherish a soft spot for Sydney, but taking back the premiership is too harsh. It wasn't Cousins or Kerr that was best on ground that day, it was Embley. I'm pretty sure Embley isn't on the juice.

We know that quite a few players have tested positive once or twice - and yet I haven't heard of any results being over-turned because of it - has anyone else?

This does raise the question about performance enhancing drugs for them though. Why aren't all players tested more often for PE drugs?

At best you could argue that Cousins should have his medal taken off him, not the whole club. But as he didn't test positive on the day than anything is mere hearsay and no court or tribunal in the world would admit it as evidence.
