There is a thing that the eggheads use called an Exertion Index. It isn't the distance, it's the effort. To even suggest there has been a "drop off" is just silly.
To suggest there hasn't been a drop off is silly, when the data is right there. 20km+ versus 14km today. That is drop off by definition.

The relationship between the drop off and effort can absolutely be debated, but not the question of whether a drop off exists.

It's hard to please some. Poor Ed had a back fracture most of the year and obviously wasn't able to do a big body of work. I just see this kid in 2 years time with a couple of pre seasons and some muscle on that body and think he could easily become a faster version of Cripps
A stress fracture in the back at only 18! He'll fit in well with our injury prone list.

You can watch it on player tracker from channel 9 when they used to live GPS track certain players.

If I can find the screen shot of it I'll get it for you.
I remember the 20km data clearly. In fact I remember when Bucks broke Crawf's record for distance covered in one game (it was 20 something km).

I am very impressed by Ed's highlights.

I know this is a curated package and there is a lot of water to pass under the bridge, however, there are three things that stand out -

1. he is very confident/decisive which I think is one of the most important traits to make it at the top level
2. disposal by hand and foot (on both sides) is creative, tidy and precise
3. he shows glimpses of serious athletic ability. if he applies himself, he has the potential to be elite

He actually reminds me of a taller and faster Sidebottom which is very high praise.
Can he kick both feet and have the commentators eulogizing about his skills every time he goes near the ball?!

So not really a bolter or slider at all except in Twomey's phantom draft?

Depends who you asked.

Twomey would heard teams above us had Coverstaions about taking Allan but was not there 1st Choice on the Board

Decrease in distance, maybe (but note the 12km avg from 05-08, but drop off suggests (to me anyway) a decreased athletic output. Which is nonsense. Distance covered is hardly a great indicator.

His initial comment didn't make any mention of dropped off athletic output, just drop off of distance, which is irrefutable.

Also 14km a game shows you how far the drop off has come from early 2000s.
Crawford Buckley Harvey Richetelli all 20km per game mids.
Mids in general were 16km per game.
Chris Tarrant was a 16km per game player as a kpf.
A lot more burst efforts now, because most of them sit on the bench for 15% of the game.

So where is this 20k data? Certainly nowhere near that in 2005, when the number was 12. See link above.

Not sure where the proof is, but it’s factual that players covered more ground in the early 00’s. The problem is when that’s assigned to any form of drop in performance as has been done here.

Players playing 100% match time, as Crawf and Bucks did, in an era of up and down continuous motion will always cover more ground than players in an era of rotations and stoppages. It’s one of the dumber comparisons that can be made, IMO, and your measure is categorically a better form of comparison.

But if he was not their first choice, how can he be regarded as a slider? From what you say, sounds more like he was expected to go later but we picked him in the first round. Anyway, I find it difficult to get enthused about draftees until they play some VFL and give us a more realistic idea of their ability.

So what is 5km worth of sprints vs today's burst effort in kms?

I get the whole Buttifant changed the game with rotations allowing for Swan and co plus the flow on effect across the afl where players to have higher up tick on shorter bursts.
But I'd actually like to see hard numbers on it before I buy in completely that they do infact over former 20km elite mids who not only ran all game but did so with a good % at pace.

Hasn't been assigned to anything other then a drop off in km ran.
Read the original post 14km vs 20km. Volume was greater then than now hence why i said a fair drop off.

My comments on WHE the player aren't because "I don't think he works hard enough".

He defended current players I assume capacity to run by highlighting that it's done at higher intensity now.
I find it interesting to see if that a 12 to 14km player would clock up what Buckley did then of 5km sprints...or 100% effort.

Yes he's had a solid AFL career but he is not the main part of a engine room or key pillar.

He plays a role and is low possesion, low goal, low goal assist, low rebounds, low tackles player.

His selling point is his aerial ability, his ability to run to position and back to defence and bob up for a goal here or there.

I would 100% saying you like our top pick to be the new WHE is aiming low.

I don’t recall claiming any of that.

I’ve indicated my opinion. Again, happy for you to think whatever you like.

I actually have posted it previously just need to find the old post, and Tarrant same season hit almost 16km, Hird 15km, Crawf 20km.

Here is a screen shot of his first tracker that season but the 2nd game he ran more and they broke it down into 100% effort , jogging, walking and standing still. When I find which game it was I'll screen shot that to...

this was round 1 2003...well before your data time of 2005 which they noted a drop in km as Interchange increased.
